I can remember 15, could eat everything and not gain weight.

I also remember 23 when I stopped training Nordic skiing/ Biathlon winter and Triathlon in summer. Metabolism put the brakes on and I didn’t the eating. Body changed a lot in the few years following, paying for it now.

On that note, I don’t want to join a gym but would like to do some strength training. Anyone have any recommendations for a home gym that is reasonably priced and not going to take up the entire basement?

That’s a decent idea, I’ll likely do that. I just can’t indoors anywhere and it will be damn cold outside soon.

My cardio is greatly improved over where it was last winter, would like to build up my upper body some. Since I stopped swimming it has never been the same.

There's other ways to do it with little or no monetary investment. Swing a maul and split wood, ride a bike.

Running is a really quick way to get in shape. In high school I used to run a lot. I'd walk one lap, then run until I couldn't anymore. Walk and catch my breath, then run until I couldn't anymore. Repeat until I did 8 laps, about 2 miles. Do that everyday for a month and eventually you won't have to stop to catch your breath anymore, you'll be able to keep running as long as you want.

The big downside to running is that it's really brutal on your knees, especially in the long run.

My knees and hips can’t take the abuse of running. I walk a pretty quick clip with the dog, not one to saunter down the street. Family won’t walk with me as I go to fast.

A maul provides excellent cardio and the faster you move the warmer you stay.

It will once you hit 30 and by the time you’re 40 you’ll be just another fat guy with a receding hair line and a bad back

I'm one of the lucky ones. Still have hair and can still easily see my feet and pecker when I look down.
Bad back ive got down though..

Gary...look up Body Solid EXM2500S. I was a little off on the price...roughly $1600 now from Fitness Factory in Chicago where I ordered mine from years ago...retailed $900, got ‘em for less on sale. Lifetime warranty, etc. If anything goes wrong, they send a technician to where the gym is at. 210 lb total stack weight. An absolute fine home gym, but it does have a footprint to it. Just look up the specs on it.

Took a quick look at them online up here and the first online place I found wants $2500. I’ll have to do some local shopping and see what’s available.
