I've had a customers 285 here needing a coil for almost a month and a half. just bid and won a 2100 parts lot on ebay LAST NIGHT to upgrade him to electronic ignition. It's all about timing isnt it............

Can someone tell me if the 285 used two different types of ignitions like the 2100?

I responded via PM, but I'll paste it here for anyone who has questions:

"From the IPL is looks like only one was offered.

The 2100 had a CD ignition like this and then late had a SEM style ignition

The 285 just had the CD but guys would switch the flywheel and SEM units from 2100s onto the 285 to make em work."

I'm not entirely an expert on this but I believe this is the total gist.

If anyone has any further information I would be interested in learning, for sure.

I think the Bosch coil only works with the Bosch flywheel. Which have the odd looking two pawl starter.

Some 285's had the SEM "G6" ignition. Again they used a different flywheel with a two pawl type starter.
