Hi Vince. You probably have a digital angle finder, if not, well worth the $12 off ebay, for setting rakers.

Got one at work.
What I did in the end was ground the rakers properly. So they are all the same angle and depth now [emoji6][emoji1360]

Onya. Best thing I did was forget about depths (and to a certain extent, cutter lengths)and focus on the angles. BobL has a great sticky on this on AS.

Update: did some more milling yesterday and it went fantastically!!!
Changes were; 8 tooth rim swapped out for a 7. Chain reground. And reground the rakers ( they were terrible) Removed the baffle from the muffler.
Granted the wood was different this time as it was still green and a different species, but It went like a cut cat!! 2 tanks and 6 slabs. Really happy how it went. Rakers were a bit too aggressive but had to correct them.

If you are milling short blocks like this, try doing a tree fork to get some nice crotch wood (some flame).

yeah if that! i was really amazed after the last attempt. i guess a combo of things; mainly this was green the other piece had been sitting for a couple of years.
this piece was donated and not selected, by will keep that in mind just the same

My mate finally started to tackle the first log I slabbed up for him which was 2 year old dry blackbutt gum. Friggin hard stuff. This has been hit with a belt sander with 40, 80 and 120 grit papers then rubbed some turps into it. And WOW

well my friend and i were at it again last weekend. this tree had to come down (thanks @treesmith ) at my mates place. but the lower section looked too good to chop up into firewood. so we milled her up. it was approx 24" dia and 80 " long 600mm x 2m for you metric folk.



we are pretty sure its a coastal blackbutt hard wood going by the looks, with a muddy centre.

the 661 with only a muffler mod on its second tank was the weapon of choice in todays milling.



because of the wide end on this log where it branched out, we were right on the limit of the 32" bar. even took off the dogs to get the extra length.







to say we were excited with what we saw (pardon the pun) would be an understatement. bloody beautiful wood.!!

towards the centre got pretty crappy with rot etc. so my friend thought it would make a great bench top for an outdoor seat. so along with a couple of bucked logs as legs and one of the top slices for a back rest, my mate got a outdoor bench seat which he wasnt expecting ( dont have a shot of it, but this was the seating slab. friggin heavy timber!!)

It went pretty well for a new stock saw. Didn't have the torque of a ported saw. It needed to stay up in the revs but did well. Took home 6 slabs. Went thru 3 tanks and only sharpen the chain once.

we have had a ton of rain and high winds of late which trees are struggling with. last month one blew over just around the corner from home so we blocked that up. and now his neighbour went over



once we got passed the splits and smaller trunk section we had a niec piece let over that was too nice to block up! ( the one in the background)







weapon of choice was the 661 with the 32" bar and 3/8 FC chain again.





right on the limit of the bar.. need to go to 36" minimum to use all the mill.



ended up with pieces 2.4m x 660mm gees they were heavy!

the goggles are fantastic too as the dust if fine and nice nice in the eyes. the colour contract from the lush green grass to the rich red saw dust was amazing. reminded me of being in the outback. the camera doesn't do it justice.
