I picked up a free homemade chainsaw mill a couple years ago. I finally dug it out with all my spare time these days of the corona virus.
I modified it a little to make it work with multiple bar lengths as my 24 inch was too short.

I got a couple maple boards milled tonight. I think they turned out pretty good.
The mill isnt 100 pecent square so may try and tweek it some tomorrow. But i did order a new one tonight from princess auto that will take up to a 36 inch bar.

I used my 038 mag which seemed to work pretty good. I have a 066 im working on that i will dedicate to milling.

Ya for sure this is addictive. I cant wait till tomorrow to make a few more boards.
It would be nice to make some sort of stand to get the log up a bit.

Get a winch then listen to your saw hum not bog. So much easier imo on you and the tool. Your tune is a bit fat for even a mill.

Nice looking saw.

You now have CMA

Ya i got it a little rich. I want to get a winch for it but gonna wait till i can go into stores. Lot of stuff is just starting to open up again from the virus.

Saw didnt bog much at all with the 7 pin vs the 8 pin.

The amount of power needed to mill surprised the hell out of me. Welcome to your new addiction.

I’m still inexperienced at it, but I have learned the hard way that all of your hard work can be ruined quickly if you don’t set that wood up to dry correctly.

Not really milling pics but heres the 066 im getting back togeather and a pic of the boards on trailer. Had to buy one board and had an old one from a barn cleaning job i did in the fall. Sure is nice to be able to make your own lumber for stuff like this. Probly wont do any milling this summer. Wait till it cools off. Too hard on the equipment in my opinion. Well and me too lol.
Gonna maybe see about picking up a longer bar too.

Another good tip is to get a leaf blower and strategically place it to move exhaust fumes and dust away from your face. This is especially helpful on large logs.

Thats a good idea too.
Another good use for the leaf blower I learned from @Steve son was it works great for cooling you off on a hot day.

Any pics of muffler mods for milling? Im gonna try and do the 066 so it blows the exhaust away from me better then my 038. It blows pretty much in my face but i never intended it to ride on the mill.

That’s a great idea. Why did I never think of that. Even a little handheld one angled at the right place would make a difference and they usually have a throttle lock to set the throttle. I wouldn’t bother on a small log, but a long 10-15 minute cut would be fantastic to have air movement to move dust and heat.

Heres my new 36 inch saw mill. Seems to work pretty good. Its much lighter the the homemade one. I was thinking be handy to have the homemade one for the first cut with ladder and the good one for making boards. Wouldnt have to make any adjustments that way other then a quick saw swap.
