Hello,

I bought a new stihl FS131 (handlebar version) and after working with it for 4 hours (full throthle mostly as was using 2.4mm nylon, heavy load with thick grass), the next day was not starting cold. I could only start it with choke open and with throthle. After heating up starts fine. Can it be cables needing adjusting? Shouldnt be valve tunning as just came from factory.

Thanks, Jorge

If you bought it new, why not report the problem to the dealer/store?

I have the machine 300km away from the dealler I bought it from. :)

Maybe try to go to the nearest one or your favorite one.

You know messing with it will VOID any warranty. A lot of people don’t realize this and end up regretting trying to do their own fix.

I have a FS 91 and when it is cold (the trimmer), I need to put the choke on to start it. Sometimes I need to feather the throttle to get it to keep going the first few seconds. But then after it is warmed up it restarts without needing the choke.

Exaclty the same I notice. Is just as my is handle bar version is akward how to do it(smidge trhothle while pulling cord). My kawasaky has a setting to set minimum throthle. The Stihl I am not used to it. It gaves first bump then I keep it open and pull 10 times until I put throthle then it goes. :) That is why I thought could have to adjust throtle cable in the adjustment screw in the handle.

Poleman is correct. If it's under warranty any Stihl dealer will be happy to fix it. Take it to the dealer nearest you.

I don't know if I understood your post correctly, but in my opinion this is completely normal behavior.

Generally, in all manuals Stihl tell you to use start position ‘)\(’, that is, when the throttle shutter is slightly open (fast idle - more than the idle position) in case the engine is warm or has been running.

Obviously, a closed choke plate |\| is necessary on a cold engine so that an AF mixture with a sufficiently low AFR is in the spark plug gap.

Are you not using the recommended ')\(' knob position when warm or the engine stalls in |\| position or did I misunderstand you?

When warm it starts normally with choke full open. At first start when cold I close the choke and pull the cord until it signals start, then keep it open as I saw somewhere it would requires choke open after firts signal it is about to start. Should it be set half choke when cold after first signal?

Yes because it is not a ‘half-choke’. This is the position of the knob when the choke plate is open, while the throttle plate is slightly open (fast idle) to facilitate starting. It is then more open than in the ‘I’ position of the knob (idle).

Thanks, will test that next. I was wondering how in Stihl fast idle was set as in other machines we use the throtle brake and push stop button on the oposite direction to trigger slightly the throtle (fast iddle). I keept pulling the cord and trying to accelerate on first firing sign which would disarm the choke/fast iddle. :)
