I did have the dealer hook up the 562 a few years ago, he showed me the hours which was over 1000, can't remember exact . Alot of hours for 6 years doing duty in a tree service.
What I liked about the 562 was its rev boost, a feature no longer available in the new 550mk2 and 572 series.
Sounds like a full modified saw with that throttle response. But I'm done with it hot start issues over the last 8 years, the top cover mod helped quite a bit. But when temps and humidity gets up there the fast idle needs to be set everytime. Constant PITA.
Got a new 71cc 31 year old saw now that is faster and lighter to boot. No more gimmicky auto tune and all the uncertainty.

Kinda sad for me to see such a nice ild saw getting too much use. They only original once lol.. And these are getting really rare..
I feel I rescued this 044 from 31 years in a storage shed prison. It's meant to have life cutting wood like I do.
Yes I'm scared to get it dirty or marked up, always have it in a case while in the back of the pickup with the other saws.
80% of the trees I remove are hardwood so saws stay fairly clean. First trees I put the 044 into was 4 small pine and had sap on it every where. So definitely no more softwood for it, leave the dirty wood for the 066 and 562, Lol.

I will be running my fleet of 044`s as long as I am physically able to lift and start them, they soon became my most used saw shortly after 89 and even though I have run newer saws the 044`s just fit me right. I never thought of keeping one as a shelf queen just to look at and admire, they earn their keep for me.

Wow thanks for keeping the 044 legend alive!

044 definitely my favorite saw of all time, a true do everything saw, they sound amazing, hit the throttle and you can feel the torque pull the bar up
the vibes do get to me after a while so run a 550xp for smaller stuff and 572 or 661 for bigger

The low top ones without the HD air filter sure were light, not much bigger than an 036

I have one or two i build and used but i do have an old 1omm made in West Germany riveted metal tag one, and a 12mm artic shelf queen

Recently I was talking to my old branch manager Steve (when I briefly worked for Stihl in 1989).
Steve just retired in Virginia Beach last fall, he was the national sales manager, previously product research and development manager.

I told him about the new 1988-89 044 I recently bought and the memories it brung back from the good old days.
He said the earliest 044's still hold the company's best power to weight ratio spec "on the edge" shared with the MS500i. But he says the 500 is selling worldwide better then beer on a hot day, Lol.

I checked the prices on a 500i and the prices are crazy, and my dealer can't even get them.
So the 044 will just have to keep on keeping my Huskies and 066's company. :D

500i may have more power but my 044 is still almost a pound lighter short by 8 grams.
But probably is a pound difference if the 044 had no oil and fuel in the pump, carb and lines:)

I'd take the cutability, durability, reliabililty, idleability and startability of the 044 over just about anything. Only disadvantage i see from long term use is the anti-vibration isn't as good versus spring but when you rebuild your own (with new bearings, buffers, etc) and a good pair of gloves, i don't notice any difference.

I'm running a the 044 with HD air filtration so probably an ounce more, but those parts close to the handle so balances perfect with a 20" light bar, as you have as well. I do a lot of noodling to block large logs for the outdoor boiler (instead of a log splitter), so i have a wrap version chip deflector to prevent clogging, with the small dog you still have a tad over 19" of effective cutting.

This one i rebuilt used to be the 044C with autochoke but was converted to regular choke long ago.
