I'm bring back to life a Stihl 029. I need an engine. The one I pulled out of the saw was full of water. Shot! Anyone ever use one of these 49mm after market? If so who builds a quality engine? I'm also open to any other suggestions. I'd like to put a 24" bar on it and just want to make sure I have enough power.

Appreciate any help.

Some have had good luck with the Farmertec top ends. I wish I could say the same.
I prefer OEM top ends, but the price point more often than not, will put a damper on things.
Hopefully you can find a used OEM top end.

Cross Performance is a really good quality kit that comes with cabers and has fewer AM flaws like some of the other cheaper Chinese kits. Use them all the time and have yet to have one come back that was an actual cylinder failure...

I used a Hutzl (Farmtech) 390 piston, cylinder, air filter, muffler & seals on an 029. Modded the muff & advanced the timing. Runs good, but lacks the torque of a pro saw (though none of mine are stock).

The guy that has it likes it, says it cuts a lot faster than his 041.

Total damage was about $60, and I used all their parts (rings, clips etc).

Runs good, but lacks the torque of a pro saw (though none of mine are stock).

I re-jetted the stock HD-5 on my saw to pick up some more torque. It is a fairly complicated as you have to push out the main discharge nozzle and block the passage to the low speed circuit, then drill another circuit from inside the carb to in front of the low speed needle seat to feed fuel to the low speed circuit. Then you drill the auxiliary jet inside the carb. I forget, it was either .3 or .35mm. With the extra flow in the low speed circuit, I blocked off the extra main jet in the carb to the high speed circuit.

Those mods gave it more low speed torque, in fact, it was just a touch 'rich' in the low speed circuit. However, I compensated by adding another degree of timing advance and the low speed improved a bit, plus gave me a bit more on top-end.

I can pull the saw down to below 6,000 rpm without bogging. I never go that low when cutting, but it does make the saw 'user friendly' when cutting.

If you have a spare carb, why not try hacking it up and see how it compares to a stock carb.

I hope Cross Performance does produce the pop-up piston. Heck, they could also produce a non-EPA approved carb. Instead of the hassle of rebuilding a carb, a person could just buy the Cross carb.

Someone has an OEM 390 top end in the classifieds if I remember correctly. I have used three of the Farmertec complete assemblies with no problems. Two of them went to a tree service. Muffler mod and trimming the tabs on the carb are a must.
I saw the 390 p&c. $125.00 bucks. Not a bad price but I still have to come up with a crank, bearings and seals. Budget is somewhat of a factor like always.

Thank you for your input everyone.

If you play your cards right, sometimes you can get the complete assembly on eBay for around $60. You will have to wait for it to get from China though...

Check your local Stihl shops for a dead one. They are very common saws, and often not worth fixing. If you can get everything OEM but the P&C, I think you would be better off.

I picked up the 029 with a fried P&C for $25. The nice thing is the bottom end is the same 029, 290 311, 039, 390 etc.

I got my crappy 029 for A$50 from a HUSKY shop. It was sitting on a shelf unloved, left over from years before when the owner bought the shop - I think he was glad to get rid of it.

I bought one off EBay this morning. I'll give it a shot. Never know might get lucky and get a good on.

Thanks again.
