You're welcome to beat me with soap. Has anyone ever used regular circlips, the ones you use pliers for? You know, double ear pin hole. They require a square cut groove but seems like it could be done.

There are some older engines that use them I believe. It's probably due to the weight they don't use them

I think I wrote this somewhere before but wondering why they don't try the teflon button trick like they use in top fuel dragsters and funny cars? Probably wouldn't work in every engine because of transfers..

I modified a couple screwdrivers the one on the left I use to install circlips and the one on the right is to take seals out I do have the stihl seal remover set and a 10 mm stihl circlip installer but it is quicker and easier for me to use the screwdriver
I had one just like the one on the right but broke it trying to get a difficult seal out. I'm going to a more expensive screwdriver next time..

OEM clips will not work in all aftermarket pistons.

Wire diameter is too small on some I have tried to use them in.

Yep, on hyway 353 piston, (used in a husky 350 rebuild using a 45mm piston and 10mm wristpin), their supplied circlip is a little bit less than 1mm in diameter which is significantly thicker than a husqvarna OEM circlip. If you use the OEM circlip it spins around in the highway piston circlip groove.

The problem with the Highway circlip is that it is eared and tends to bend rather than spring into place. I found Wiseco 10mm circlips (open no ears)[Wiseco 10CW or Wiseco CW10] that are very close to the same diameter wire as the highway circlips and are springy and go in using a modified stubby screwdriver. I will post a picture of the screwdriver later. They seem to fit in the groove, are strong, do not bend and stop the pin from coming out. If it fails I will let you know, but I do not think this is going to happen, they appear to be a significant upgrade from the highway circlips.

Now who can source wiseco part Wiseco CW10 so it does not cost an arm and a leg to buy and mail the circlips out to a hobbyist????

How do I tag Definitive Dave with this? Sorry, I am a dinosaur.

I like to use the Echo circlips also, easier to install with the 2 ear design plus they're hard enough to stay in place. I think the 590 Echo clips will fit in the larger Stihl engines.

590 ECHO circlips are no longer eared and are made for an 11 mm wrist pin
They are 0.95 mm thick and uncompressed have a O.D. Of 12.60 mm

I've never actually used the bigger ones, just figured they'd fit. I've used a few of the little ones on the 025 engines and they seem to work well. Got some on my recently built Dolmar 5100 and they haven't flew out yet. The two eared design sure are easy to install and remove.
Some enterprising person needs to start making circlips to use on the aftermarket kits that aren't made out of baling wire. I did manage to buy circlips off the Greek on ebay, his stuff seems to be made well. His piston rings are almost a must on aftermarket PC kits.

Take a look at the attached chart. For thicker circlips for 10mm wristpins I am going to use the Yamaha ones in the future. 88 cents each with free delivery to a Yamaha motorcycle dealer near you.

1504286592108.jpg I've got a meteor piston kit for my 064, that came with the "eared" clips. Any thoughts on the meteor clips? Should I just pick up a set of oem clips (if the wire diameter is the same), these clips measure .040". Anyone know what the oem clips measure.

Thanks
Jeff

Just clip most of the "ears" off Jeff. Try not to bend the clips inward as you install them either. Collapsing them is the number one reason they fail regardless of brand or type.

I know this is old but I haven't been on in awhile. I was wondering this exact thing about the Wiseco clips because I bent a meteor one and the OEM one is too thin. Thank you so much! I just ordered a set.
