So I've been cluttering up ads I think, so I figure I'd go ahead and ask all my questions...

First, to get a feel for the brands, what saws are "great" saws? I am most familiar with stihl, but not sure why some saws are so sought after.

So what saws, arejust great saws and why?

Second, why do 064 and 084 dissapear very quick if they are for sale?

If you sit back read, search and then read some more you will work out what is popular & sort after by folks. This is a very subjective question kinda like going to a car forum and asking which cars are great. You can ask 5 guys and get 5 completely different answers. The market is a good indicator of what's good and what saws retain value used and sell fast.

With regards to the 064 and 084, the former is one tough sum'bich with awesome grunt that'll graft hard day in day out, and the 084 is identical except she's a bigger old beast with the bonus of a manual oiler, and IMO is a perfect milling saw. Especially now we have the option of the cross performance top end!

I agree and have been, mostly on AS... but for the most part a few saws get mentioned and I figured there are others out there.

Example, I bought the 044 because I had ran my dad's and like it. A lot of people say that's an awesome saw, but the 046 is a little bigger and close to same weight, so they are also popular... and then the dolmar 7900 is apparently a great saw that I had never heard of.

I have a Makita 79cc same as the Dolmar 7900.One of the great power to weight saws there is along with the 044.

There are alot of great saws.Heres my list of saws I think are great and at the top for each class according to the big three manufactures for the popular class of saws 50/60/70

Husqvarna 346 . Stihl 261 . Dolmar 5100 .50cc
Husqvarna 357xp .Stihl 361 .Dolmar 6100 .60cc
Husqvarna 372 .Stihl 044 .Dolmar 7310 .70cc

That's great, answers a lot of what I was pondering.

So with the huskys, the 572 for example is a newer generation? Like an 044/440/441 type deal?

I'm really liking the dolmars, there's one here I may pick up.

Not sure about a 346 or 261 size saw, as I never use the 028 anymore, and that's ok because it was my dad's, so no issue with a shelf queen there.

Best bing to do is try to run as many saws as possible to form your own conclusions.

Or just run echo :)

Hang around long enough you'll have 1 of each in no time.

Right now you think 3 saws will serve any task you could encounter and will go off in search of your perfect 3 saw plan. Then you will start hording and have 50 in no time.

That's my issue. I have a 70cc saw so the 7900 dolmar seems redundant. I don't care for redundancy, it feels like waste to me.
