I'm pretty sure, mopar had the 1st altered wheelbase cars. AFX (A class Factory Experimental) cars were the birth of funny cars, a few years later....

https://musclecars.howstuffworks.com/classic-muscle-cars/1965-plymouth-factory-altered-wheelbase.htm

mopar started altering wheelbases for better weight distribution, and others soon followed, then the funny car was born.
I'm not much of a mopar guy, but I think they did start pretty early with the "letter cars".

Yep the early 60's cars with the 413 and 426 wedge motors.

Chrysler 300's were a luxury car, started in 1955 with the 331 hemi, 1956 was a 354 hemi, 1957-1958 was a 392 hemi, 1959-1965 was a 413 wedge (not hemi). 426 wedge or hemi was never in a letter car from the factory.

Letter cars were not 1/4 mile racers, although, some were used in circle track venues.

Did you ever think maybe they will ad an even larger bore cylinder and jump it up even higher, I'd like to see that happen as it seems to be overbuilt with a purpose in mind, hopefully that's one of the purposes.
Might be so there's some parts worth selling after it gets thrown out of a tree...

Ford parts were always harder to get than other co parts. You had to be hard core, and know your stuff, but you could get them to run great.

My Mustangs with either 390 or 427 Ford engines were not taken lightly by anyone who knew about them, and surprised many who did not know about them.

I never ran against a Hemi, but several 440s, including 6 packs. The heavier Hemi's had trouble getting traction on the street (w/o drag slicks).

They were used in drag racing starting in 1960. Here is a good read about the early racing history of mopar. https://ncro.org/pdf/60 Years of Mopar Drag Racing.pdf

No Chrysler 300's letter cars, were not 1/4 mile drag cars, reread that article, they were used in circle track venues, daytona beach, nascar, panamerica, indy 500, other road races courses, and at bonneville.

300's letter cars were not on the 1/4 mile pounding down the drag strips.

See that guy in the front engine dragster (lower right) that is Don Garlits, he used 392 hemi engines in his dragsters, but that just a engine, not a 300 letter car.

There is plenty of proof otherwise, but I'm not going to argue about it. Seems you like to argue quite a bit.

On the contrary I dislike arguing (a lot) but I also dislike incorrect information.

I've been a mopar fan for a long time, been to many shows, all over the USA, read many books, etc. 300 letter cars were built as a luxury car.

I used to know the president of the Chrysler 300 club, before he got sick and retired, I been to his personal museum a few times, I hauled a few cars for him, to his shop to restore. He used to restore 300 letter cars to 100 point original show cars, down to grease paint marking on the chassis, etc, he has one year of every letter car in his collection, and a few duplicate years. Shelves above shelves in his shop of documentation about letter cars, and races they won. Never once read anything about them being used as factory sponsored 1/4 mile drag cars. I did read about their history and accomplishments in the circle track races.

Without any financial support from Chrysler, mercury outboard founder Carl Kiekhaefer bought a fleet of 1955 300's, they won 21 races in nascar with those 1955 300's, and finished in the top 5 32 other times.

Have a read at these articles.
