What does a retired military truck like that go for?
I prolly overpaid at $8k, but the truck had like 8100 miles on it, no rust, is a hardtop, and the government $56k barcode stickers were still on it. I figured that price for a diesel medium duty 6 × 6 wasnt bad as a new GMC 4500 4 × 4 is a bit more than that and they ride bad, but they do steer tighter.

I know... I was gonna comment on that, and forgot. My Cummins is a beast when it comes to towing. Gonna get a new one in 2020 when the new trucks come out... hopefully it’s worth the wait. For now, the 5.9 handles whatever I throw at it.

I bought one last week.

It’s getting it’s heart pulled tomorrow & some new guts.

I’ll try to get pics.

Not bad I've seen some around here for 10000 from private owners.

Thankfully the state of Oregon licensed my deuce and a half (M35A3C) as an American General pickup so I can run passenger car plates vs the expensive commercial ones. After hearing that, my insurance company insures it as a stake bed pickup for about a third the price of commercial truck insurance. While it has poor city manners, it does get 13mpg and is no longer or wider than the 2003 Dodge crewman my ex girlfriend had, however it sure looks it. I got it for use as a street legal skidder.

@Mastermind 360 hp peaked around 1970, after that got worse and worse until it phazed out, 390 phazed out early so never got the bad rap that the 360 did. With a bit of work a newer 360 can be made to run as good or even better than it's older counterpart. As originally designed were an excellent purpose built light truck engine that performed marvelously until the smog era came. If a 390 crankshaft could be found, you could literally make a 390 out of your 360. These aren't laying around any more like they used to. Nor are the 428's taken out of smashed Mustangs, was a good trick while it lasted.
If gas mileage is your greatest concern, cut off Bubba's nuts and buy him a Prius. I think given the choice, he will take the truck.
Not to worry, no one with a new truck will hook up to the back of a 360 powered Ford anyways, and if they do they are in for an education in physics.

The big block M-motor was particularly bad in the early 80's. Such a huge motor, so much gas and very little POWA. My boss had an '81 Ford 1-ton dually with a 400M for hauling concrete forms and a Bobcat. It was reliable, I gotta say that. Damn thing fired even when it was -20F in Wyoming. But, you could get out and run beside it going up a hill. It was gutless. Windsor motors are much easier to get power from, IMO. If I were gonna build one for a hoopty of mine, I'd go with a bored and stroked 351W any day of the week.

Just for comparison....the '82 Suzuki Samurai came with a 1.0L engine that had max HP of 52. The 400M was like 159 HP at 6.6L. If the Suzuki was 6.6L, it be putting out close to 350HP and 350ft lb. of torque. So, cube for cube, the Zuki was putting out double the HP and the same torque as the 400M.

I love me some Fords, but damn, sometimes I'm scratching my head and saying "WTF were they selling us"?

Looks bad.
A buddy of mine was there, haven't heard from him, brought his family there as he's temporarily stationed there; then he was pulled out and they are still there, praying for the best for them as well as others.

Do you know where he was stationed? I can call the US Embassy. I used to be attached with the Embassy when I was stationed here.

Actually, I got an email from them regarding the fires. They are taking calls for assistance of US Citizens.
