I'm sure all those that have ported there 461 and changed the coil to an unlimited one, have them lying around.. from a thread not so long ago it was said you could use almost any coil from a stihl, it’s weather the lead is to long or short.. I bet mastermind has a few old 461 coils.

All I can think of, it fat as hell, the spark screen is blocked, I hope you have tried a used known good working spark plug, maybe check the flywheel gap to the coil...oh and try to clean the coil around the earth wire, it could be oily sawdust earthing it a bit, maybe worth a try without the earth wire connected, that would eliminate a weak earthing of the kill/stop switch...

Anyhow get a vid, when you next try it..

Well the clutch and drum look pretty worn out, so parts are on order and we'll try that. Note the old Husky 268 clutch to the right of the skinny 461 clutch! Thanks for all the replies ... I may still need a coil.

A flat view of the clutch would be good. I’m guessing it is oem,,,, and has not been played with before.. ie correct springs in.
Just asking Is clutch drum within wear limits also the clutch shoes..

Just one other thing that is in my head and bugging me.
the chain ! Is it good. And all correct. The reason I ask is I have an old chain that would not cut.. so I made it more hungry, by filing the rakers down. The saw dies if I allow it to eat to much now..

Cheers

Clutches don’t wear sideways, the 268 just has a beefier clutch. Compare it to a new or good used 461 clutch.

I agree, worn springs usually will let the chain creep and you can’t set the tune worth a darn on the L jet. I would be very surprised if the shoes themselves were worn on a low hour saw unless he just abused the saw. I know it’s not a stihl but our 390 has the original clutch with half a million ft on it and the 372 that died with a million ft on it the clutch is still fine. They last a long time if you don’t abuse it.

I’ve seen the dolmar 6400/7900 clutches wear out springs or the clutch parts/washers themselves and the chain creeps... but no power problems from it. Maybe I’m off base but yeah, just what I’ve seen myself.

Following up- I replaced the clutch and drum, they needed it anyway.

Still seems low on power, spark screen is clean, but I don't notice the rev limiter kicking in past 13,200 and I can run the high speed mixture screw in all the way with not much change in RPM. Almost seems like timing is retarded ( or maybe I am!).

I pulled the flywheel to see if the key was sheared, and it is fine. The chain is a new Oregon 72EXL, new bar.

Coil maybe ?

Also cleaned the air filter again, and it makes no noticeable difference in RPM with or without the filter.

The carb has been rebuilt, and metering lever checked, but carb kits are pretty cheap so I may go through it again. Thanks.

Could be. The saw just feels lazy as it revs up and doesn't have the snap that the other 460/461 I have worked on.
Where do you have your Carb set now? Are the limiter caps in tact? Does it sound fat lazy or lean lazy? The rev limiter is 13.5k? If you have it set to four stroke below 13,000, it is maybe fat, Did you check the intake skirt when you did the carb rebuild? With the filter off and this spit back shield off is it spitting back through the carburetor?

Ok that's a lot of questions, but good ones.
Limiters are trimmed.
H and L are about 1 turn.
Sounds normal, 4 stroking at about 13,000-13,100, fat.
I assume the rev limiter is 13,200, do not know.
Intake skirt good.
Some minor spitback into the black shield, not much evidence, but I did not run it with the shield off.

I believe the rev limiter is 13.5, pull the spit shield when running to see if there is excessive skirt blow by, but it it is idling good and starting easy...it’s probably good. Check the carb to see what h jet it has, there are two sizes, that could be an issue
