Am I correct in assuming that I must buy a rope that has the button molded on one end so it doesn't pull out of the handle?

Depends on what you want. You can get the Elastostart rope from your dealer or you can use a regular starter rope and handle

IPL shows both types - but no molded handle and cord. Check page 22

I was able to knot mine up to make it work.
