No one around here could fix it if they could get the parts. Most place don't have a guy who can diagnose anything, recondition a damn thing or think beyond what the print out says to do. I know for sure ten Stihl dealers on more that will not rebuild a saw. I just told you why. The comebacks would kill them. They just replace the burnt new ones and refuse out of production models that need a major repair.

"Sorry, your saw is not fixable so please come pick it up no charge. We have new models in stock if your interested. We take trade-ins."

They sell all the parts and parts saws on Ebay now. Easier, faster and more profitable with happier customers overall. The guys who do rebuild tools taking over the dealers of old won't sell parts now to walk in types. Ebay mostly killed that around here.
My buddy that owns the small engine shop won't touch any homeowner quality saws, trimmers or blowers anymore. Only pro grade and only Stihl, echo and Husqvarna. He'd rather do mowers, tillers and snowblowers.

It's a little bit different around me , there's plenty of shops but a few of them really go above and beyond for me . I'll walk in and request a bolt or a throttle link and the dealer will actually rummage through old stock or try to order parts for me , they are saw people though and business owners 2nd.
Last month my saw dealer told me he had a long time chruch going customer bring in an 038 mag he found along the road with that dealers old sticker on it and told him he couldn't keep it with a clear conscious and left it with the dealer. A few weeks later an old man came in looking for a new saw with a down trodden look on his face and told the dealer how he let his son load the firewood truck and forgot to check it him self personally and lost his favorite 20year old saw he originally bought at that dealer, he searched the highway to no avail.
The dealer asked him what saw it was and the old man replied an 038 mag.
The dealer had a little fun with him and told him he couldn't sell him the 250 he picked out because he wouldn't want to handle it , then reached behind the counter and pulled out his 038 and handled it over.
He said the man nearly cried and personally showed up at the fellows house to thank him ,who returned it to the shop.
I feel pretty fortunate to have saw shops like that around me.
Some are complete sh!tbags also and robb people of hard earned money and equipment.

We have plenty of *s-wordbags around here. I've lost tools off the back of a pickup truck, gate fell down but they were gone in less than a few minutes.
Good neighbors are hard to find. We have a few and the rest are crap.

Someone stole the loose change out of my wife's car and my daughters last night unlocked in the drive. Took balls to that here just feet from my house. They might not get so lucky next time. Motion detectors went crazy before with small animals so now I'm adding a light with an indoor alert. Cop said someone is doing it in different neighborhoods in our town almost every night now. Feel a bit sorry for that chump when they get caught by a resident who is pissed off. We lost under fifteen bucks and they left no prints. Cop said the perpetrator wears gloves and he is on tape but nothing to match it with.

Although I grew up in Pennsylvania I was born in Jersey and I was there till about 8 years old , even back then anything not locked down walked off.

No doubt. He wore gloves.
They hit Woodcrest development near by every two weeks.

Guessing my hood was worth fifty bucks maybe. They got less than fifteen here. We left the cars unlocked last night so it's our fault. They touched nothing else as not to anger the masses, little pricks.

Bearings, go learn more about bearings. No threads here devoted to them, yet. Bit-O' chatter here and there but not much condensed.

In one of my early careers, I worked in a steel tube mill and rebuilt ID heads and bearing blocks on one of the jobs I had there. I like bearings that are silky smooth although my fingers and hands aren't as sensitive to the feel as they once were.

Take and clean up the bevel on the edge of the port where you cleaned up the cylinder wall. You don't want any aluminum smear in there to scratch your new piston.

Agreed, I'll touch up everything and check all the bevels. thx

I’ve got an oem jug (somewhere) if you need it.

I know you said that the scoring is mostly on the ex side, but I betcha that was straight gassed. Probably lived for a bit if your friend was using a decent oil, whatever residual was in there let it last a bit.

The flow through the ports is fascinating. I’ve done just what you did as well many times. You explained to yourself why OEM cylinders cannot be beat. Most of the finesse in them is hidden in the transfer tunnels. I’ve yet to see an AM cylinder beat an oem one. It would be a rarity if one did, though I do recall some hyway jug being great here for someone (372?).

Meteor jugs won’t flow as well as oem, but they do have decent QC. They have plating that exceeds oem specs and is nearly impossible to machine or grind. Anyone remember the 046 jugs @Definitive Dave gave away with the odd intake ports? Many of us used them on builds never to do so again. The plating was made of kryptonite.

Another good point, the original cause of failure will have to be corrected before the job is complete, as in leak repaired, fuel changed etc..

The old Tecomec 272 cylinders would out shine the originals and the only reason I could find was the different size/shape of the upper transfer port. They're all gone like DeSoto's now though.

Kryptonite hell, that stuff Meteor uses is tougher than that. Lol Had a blown up 660 come in that had one on it, a ring hung in the upper transfer and broke out the top of the piston, then proceeded to be completely digested and exhausted. The piston was pounded to smithereens, the cylinder, not so much as a scratch on it, or any evidence of any failure of any kind. I replaced with OEM as I already had the displeasure of trying to build with one, broke a tool post on the lathe trying to bust through the plating on the band for my efforts, never again.
They do however make for an excellent replacement on a stock rig that will perform like/similar to OEM with any consistency. Saves having to explain why the saw doesn't run as well as it used to with a hit and miss brand. "Well, you missed, sorry".

I appreciate the offer. I'm thinking this one will come out OK once I get done playing with it. None of the places I went to last night had Scotch Brite... I guess it all got used up making Covid vaccine... along with all the toilet paper. I'll check the auto parts stores when I get into town today. I had hoped to get outside to split a bunch of wood today and get that culvert placed and covered, but monsoon season has set in here... I'll need some tractor time too since half the driveway has washed down to the bottom of the hill.

If you have an ACE hardware or other place that mixes paint its a high likelihood of them having scotch pads in various grits.

I was thinking the paint places too, but I was in a couple big box stores yesterday thinking for sure they would have it, but they only had the green and super rough stuff.

There are a few other places here I think will have it, but I have a busy day anyway...

I’ve used both green and red with similar results. Either one will work for what you want to do. An eye bolt chucked in the drill with a good size chunk on the end works pretty good
