Anyone else suspect that the saw was run too lean and hot after looking at the spark plug color? Also, I'll bet, given the extend of the damage, that metal bits have found their way into the main bearings.

Yes, Agreed. I wouldn't put this saw back together without new bearings and an inspection of the crank outside of the case.
I can see the point made where the crank may have bluing on it from factory, however, look at the wrist pin. That is further evidence the saw was hot. That pin was smoked and blued oh so obviously where the needle bearings rode. If that was hot, so was the bottom bearing, IMO of course.
Tear it apart, you may find the foreign object was part of the cage to a main bearing.

I'm talked to the owner today and suggested full replacement after I split the case. He's providing the parts and it may end up being full chinesium... He's on a budget. I suggested a Meteor kit for the top at least. I'll see what he decides on. I'm just trying to help him out.

Is the cylinder trashed? That squish band can be cleaned up on a lathe if the ports aren’t all gouged up

I can hang a nail several places and it's pretty trashed, he wants it to last another 10 years. I was thinking about either the Meteor kit at 140 shipped or the Hyway at 114 shipped.

Are these much better than the low cost stuff for durability?

Throw up some cylinder pics if you don’t mind. Oem with a couple bad spots is probably better than taking a chance on something that might be out of round or have poor port bevels or plating flaking off.

there is a complete kit from a company in Utah that has everything needed for a bargain price. Has anyone used their stuff?

Is it safe to use like 320 wet sandpaper in there or not. I'm here to learn and figured there is a bunch-o-brain power here...

What would be the best way to clean up a cylinder? I'm sure there are several posts if can find them.
