Here's a few videos. I didn't retune or touch the carb after any of the mods.

Stock:

Advanced ignition only:

Muffler modded only:

Muffler mod and advanced ignition:

That's it so far. I'll do the carb up this evening so I can check that out tomorrow.

Looking good Jim! The timing advance seemed to make it snappier while the muffler mod seemed to let it lug better, definitely ran the best with both though. Interested to see what the carb mod will do.

I would measure the squish to see if it is a good candidate for a gasket delete. Usually, it will lower the jug about 17/1000.

Deleting the gasket not only increases compression, but it increases the effective length of the power stroke (the distance from TDC to the Exhaust port) and increases the intake duration (since that opens from the bottom), so it can be a worthwhile mod.

Sorry for the hijack but this was an answer I've been looking for on the BGD. I finally have a saw that I can do this to and lets just say I would of goobered some ports trying to retime it.

Heya Jim big fan here really like seeing the gains you have here out of the different areas on the saw.I'm curious would you say this is a stage one Mod after doing a muffler mod and advance the timing .Seems like I've heard of this somewhere.Instead of offering such a thing like stage one stage two stage 3.My bet is you probaly just make it simple and charge a one price to Mod and port the *f-wording saw to the best of your ability.Rather than leaving the customer unhappy and wanting more just so you can suck some more juice out of them.I've talked to some others about these types of stages and they are never really happy always questioning the performance of there tool and the work they had done.

I'm not optimistic that carb mods will do much with the stock air filter.
Well we're gonna find out here in a few.
I kinda feel the filter cover is restricted more than the filter, that thing sure is a ducks ass. It locks down tight enough where it draws most of it's flow through the inside of the rear handle.

I'm of the belief that carbs are far to often overlooked because they are intimidating for most.

Great work Jim!
This is going to be a good thread.

Can I ask what you did with the muffler mod?
Baffle/no baffle?

Also, with a late 036 about to hit my bench, I would be VERY interested in what the "carb mod" is

The muffler mod was a simple enlargement of the existing outlet. There was no baffle and you can still see how big the original hole was.

I'll paint it up after I get a little further down the road on it.
The carb mod wasn't anything special other than metering seat enlargement which I took too far. I didn't ruin it or cause it to fail, just no improvement in my eyes. It isn't easy to see any performance difference with the log I was working with. It went from nice clean "A" grade for the first four videos to a knotted up bucket of concrete. Lol
I'm planning to swap out metering seats and give it another go before I pull the jug for port work. I still think there is a decent gain there if I use the correct seat size.
If you have an older carb without the intelli vent thing then you can run it like this to eliminate any breathing problems.

I just bolted it on without changing anything on the saw whatsoever. It won't work on this saw because the carb has the vent so I'd have to swap out to an older 036 carb and it would work.

It is an 044 plate that was trimmed down for another application. The more I looked at it sitting there the more I wondered if it would fit so I bolted it on to see. I was surprised to see that it actually fits and isn't in the way of anything but the cover. I'm not going to try it out on this build because I'd have to use a different carb.
