I worked for Stihl Canada from 1988 till 2005 and any failure like that would be looked after if it was a manufacturing flaw . Stihl Germany engineering would never say ( or admit ) it's a flaw in design but the customer would be looked after , they would never just keep the saw .
BTW , Hans Peter Stihl loves Ferrari's , he has or had a few he collected and loved talking about them if you brought the subject up when he was in house for a visit .

I should add that Stihl stands behind it's products , I've seen them go the extra mile many times to make things right even beyond warranty ...however , they will not cover equipment that has been tampered with and we saw a fair bit of that in the Tech. Dept. where loggers had played with the carb and ran the saw lean with damage from lean seize or excess RPM . Stihl is a family owned company and while they aren't perfect they do take a lot of pride in the equipment with their name on it . A lot of this plays out by how well the dealer and/or customer presents their case to have the said piece of equipment looked at by Stihl with all information required . Sometimes it's a difficult process and takes time depending how far up the chain of command it has to go . Germany only gets involved if there is a clear pattern of failures in a product . Decisions for most cases are looked after by head office at Stihl VB in USA or Stihl Canada .

From the heat marks on the wrist pin, I was thinking likely a piston bearing failure.

Legally, they should not be able to keep your saw and not replace or reimburse you for it, PERIOD. If I were him, I would request the saw back, even now. The parts are worth something.

You can always justify another saw.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this. No way in hell would they keep my saw that I paid for.

I had an early model 661 with every problem that's ever been mentioned with them. My dealer sent the saw back to stihl after they couldn't iron out the problems themselves. I received a new saw the day I sat my saw on the counter for them to send back. Some dealers are better than others id say.

Further more, a dealer that caters to grass mowers and land Scrapers is much less likely to help out a saw oriented problem than a dealer that deals with loggers frequently. I've seen it time and time again. Working a 100 Mile radius from home you tend to figure out what dealers are worth your time and what ones aren't.

A good dealer factors a lot into resolving a problem with your saw or any OPE with the manufacturer .
Some dealers are right on top of things and others.....well lets just say some shouldn't be dealers . Stihl tries hard to educate dealers on diagnostics and repairs at service schools and the like and for some it really works , for others they just don't get it .

I think anyone that is remotely competent would see it that way...idk who would be cool with just handing something over you paid around 1k for and just letting it go.

My point exactly. This is why I don't believe it's true.

Believe it....it true. Stihl kept the saw according to the dealer. And no, he got nothing in return.....no credit, no I'm sorry or anything. They said it was his fault for over raving it. It had been adjusted by the dealer, limiters still, in place, no mods of any kind. Used Stihl ultra oil with 91 fuel.
He made part of his living in the winter with the saw cutting bug trees....he knew how to operate a saw.
He explained the story to me and explained the dealer was good at first when they checked it in store and found the broken piston. The dealer said the would pay half and Stihl would probably cover the other half. When dealer presented what was going on they said they wanted to see the saw, so it was shipped back to them. Upon inspection they said it was operator error and the saw had been above max rim 2% of the time and wouldn't warranty it. That's when the dealer backed up and wouldn't do anything either. He then asked for his saw back, so the dealer requested it be shipped back to the store. Apparently it never came, and no one else could give him an explanation on where it was.
Since, a lot of business has been lost by that dealer and they have either went to the other Stihl dealer in town or changed to Husky.....as he did.

No disrespect, but anyone with any brains cells smells fish.... This is crazy, you tell me a under warranty saws blows up and they take it and don't say anything, ya right.... I got a ms461 a few months old, and if that happens, look up Muncie star press paper in Indiana, my picture will be in there from burning the dealership down....this is just silly!!!!!!!!!!'

In all seriousness man I am not trying to be rude or disrespectful, and even though I like the stihl brand, I can still tell the difference in right and wrong.... I nor anyone else on this site knows what In the hell really happened to the saw.... I mean lets be honest, it could have been mechanical failure or it could have been your buddy straight gassed it.....

If only I could of been a fly on the wall, that's all I have left to say!!!!
