So this well used 461 has a broken tab on the clutch side case and the owner doesn’t want to split and rebuild yet. I have some pictures below to show the damage.

I am wondering if I could get the ole JB welder out and work around the support fins and possibly insert a steel pin to secure it. This is the inner dog mount so likely needs to strong enough to hold up. Does anyone have any insight or advice?

Is this a case replacement situation? It wouldn’t be a bad thing to do a rebuild on it at this stage of the saws life.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any input yall can provide.

I feel your pain. My 500i is the same way. I was trying to find a local guy to weld it back on. But people around here look at me like I’m crazy. Sooooo I bought the case half and split it when I get a chance.

There are some guys here on OPE that have successfully welded up case halves like this. I’m not sure on pricing but my goal is to get mine welded up after I install the new one I bought, God willing. This way I can still use the saw.

Oddly mine is cracked in the same location. Not broken off but has a crack. Should I JB weld it up before it breaks?
I think I would. anything to prevent the thing breaking off. We JB welded this tab back on and ill put some pictures of the end result here. Testing in the wood next week and after if it last that long

Well thats good to know. I asked the local saw shop and he said not to bother. I thought yea i figured you would say that, I bust it off and bring it in for a new case half. Even if i did bust it i would replace the case myself.

There are superior epoxies compared to JB weld, including this aluminum epoxy (I’m pretty sure this is what I have). But nothing will come close to welding it properly.IMG_1152.jpeg

A common repair for srcarr52 😀
Just send him the saw minus the top handle and clutch cover.
No need to disassemble the case.

This is the easy and best way. Half the cost of a new case half and twice as strong when he’s done.

As far as the others, if it already cracked magnesium, there is no epoxy that is going to be strong enough to hold it and prevent it from breaking off again. I’m a fan of using it where it works well, but smearing it all over case ears and dog bolt holes is just making a harder job for the welder when he fixes it right
