It depends on someone's definition of "porting" as well. Depends on the builder's goal.

I get laughed at for using the term "drivability". Case in point, an 026 with an 044 carb. Very quick saw, take it in the woods and you want to throw it off a cliff. I have no interest in building another.

I want a saw that has more power and can pull a longer bar if needed. Not bad on fuel. Not too loud.

I'll sacrifice a faster speed through wood for the above. It's just how I do them.

My o26 burn the same or less fuel than a stock one. I have no idea why.

I should mention I'm hearing impaired and wear a cochlear implant. It limits the sound once it gets to a certain cutoff point. But I still get a headache from constant noise after a while if I don't wear plugs or muffs. I don't know why someone wouldn't wear them. I can actually hear the saw better when I'm tuning it listening for four stroke with plugs/muffs. It gets rid of harsh excess noise it seems. But as I said my hearing isn't exactly like a normal persons so I can't directly compare.

Goin to a cut a tree down for a buddy on a saturday or wackin some firewood is my usual for using a ported saw .. and im sure that goes for 99% of the members on this forum...fun for us , but most people could care less.

But when you're on a job , especially in a residential/urban area sound is a big thing.. you have alot goin on and can't have your head up your ass and have to be able to communicate with your boys .. the enviroment is loud enough sometimes and most guys dont wanna listen to a saw that cracks your fukkin ears all day long .. when im in a bad mood i don't either..it just aggravates me more.

I yelled at one of my own saws one day..i was workin the lines for my boss and the other guy was using a ported 346 that was mine and after 5 minutes of tryin to communicate with him and total frustration i turned around and screamed at that kid to shut that fukkin thing off i cant hear sh!t.

Perspective.

My 034S you did is the best behaved saw I own, I think that is why it is my favorite.

This is a great thread. It's nice to see folks with real experience telling it like it is.

I port saws for a living, and hate overly loud saws for real work. I also prefer the newer versions over the classics for work.

As for a ported MS241. The first few I did were ok....but not great. I got gains....but not huge gains. Then @blsnelling and I talked about this model. He was kind enough to share the things he was doing. I can confidently say that the gains I'm now getting are well worth the effort.

On mufflers.....I use stock mufflers on some of my own saws, even after port work.

I put a new stock muffler on a ported MS261 I use for work...it was a bit offensive for others working around me and doing jobs in residential areas. We all have different expectations from our saws, I like being able to use ported saws at work as well as play. Its good that builders have a few options on the shelf for saw mufflers.

Have you thought about trying a well done 026?

They're miserly on fuel and are lighter than one would think. I'm not sure on the 241, but my 026 seems lighter and is smaller than a 261.

Randy builds a mean 026.

I have 2 for backups like when I put new rings in the 241 last year.

That's how I like em. Piss rev but also be reliable. Bet ur getting better fuel economy due to breathing better and timing. I also look at power to weight ratio too. It's a big deal when everything your doing is not on a loader or cant. Most the jobs I'm on my 360 t will take on a gpod chunk of the way. Then I go to a 036 or 661 I skip the 461 when the 661 don't weight much more and cuts faster and bigger stuff with ease

Ive kinda gotten to the point i just skip a 70cc saw as well , i dont cut big logs often at all and when i do its not for a long period anyway so i just use a 90cc saw.

I'm gonna come back to this thread one more time then let it die.

To all those that recommend an MS 250. You guys have a point and this photo proves it.

The 241 is 3 days old, I go away for a little while with instructions left to clear brush and here are the chainsaw tools and I return to this.

Idiot, some guys would f-up a wet dream....

Lately I have been running my ms250 with a 16" GB bar and that Oregon 91vxl chain....it flat out kicks ass with this set-up....if I had a ground crew, they would run 250s with 16-18" bars, wether they liked it or not....I actually like running my ms250 with the rig I got on her now, (yes I said it), and I have pro saws in The 40-50cc size range....

Sorry I hear about the saw, SUCKS!!!

Do you consider the MS250's disposable? Due to their initial cost factors.
Are you running. 325 or 3/8?

Some 250s make it a couple years in the tree biz...so when their time is up from natural causes i guess you got your moneys worth and leave em' for parts if you so desire..swapping them to picco really makes em scoot.

People say pro saws last longer..im not sure if thats true or not..depends on the owner i guess.

If i had more money than brains id buy pro saws for hired help..but im kinda short on both.
