Thanks Wilhelm

Very good of you to share all this knowledge, may be the muffler holds back the 7900
Makitas.
Is is wise to buy a 7900 given it could be laying up a long time as NOS,
would this laying up cause build up or deterioration on the barrel or bearings.
I can't find a 6400 so looks like I may have to go for one of the others.
Good to hear your saws are working out well for you, there is a Stihl
045 here for 35 years and it still goes, guess am expecting too much from the
newer stuff, and judging by the reviews of the newer saws they certainly are
not made like this any more.
You mentioned coil changed on the newer saws, when and why did this take place,
could I expect coil trouble on the 7900.

Thanks & Regards, john

My Dolmar PS-6400:

This is the only clip I have up on YouTube sporting my PS-6400.
It is pulling a "triangle tooth" loop (read: a loop most chainsaw enthusiast would have tossed a long time ago) which makes a very narrow kerf.

Last Saturday I bucked oak with my PS-6400 and a new carbide tipped chain, at the largest log diameter the 20" bar was buried.
The clip is on my PC, I'll try and upload it at my earliest convenience.

P.S.: Original Dolmar/Makita 7900's are no longer made, only NOS ones can be found.
All newly manufactured 79k's are basically 7910's - but they don't differ much from their predecessors and are still mostly nicknamed 7900! ;)
Yes, I see from the Dolmar site that its all 7910 models as opposed to 7900.

All new Dolmar and Makita's feature the SLR muffler, it is an EPA/environment thing - it can relatively easy be reverted.

No, there should be no issues with the new coils!
They get mentioned because they are limited to 12.8k rpm as opposed to 13.5k on the old coils.

I could still source NOS PS-6400 and PS-7900 and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them if I needed any.
I don't think them sitting in a box would do them any harm over time!

It is difficult to know if any deterioration is possible, one would assume manufacturers would
take this into account a simple spray of what ever into the casing and cylinder before assembly
would suffice, but there is that old Stihl I have, lay up for years at a time, no oil in cylinder or
any other treatment and it is a flyer.
I now see I can get a 6100 Makita for a full 100.00 sterling cheaper than I can get its Dolamr counterpart,
swinging towards this direction right now, and its .325 .58 which is the same as my Shindaiwa
490, am pretty sure the bars will work from the Shindaiwa too.
Any idea if the 7900 has a larger slot in the bar, if so it will not fit the Shindaiwa,
would not expect it to either given the difference in power.
Thanks for explaining the coil difference, so I take it the older model Makita 7900 has the high RPM Coil.

Regards, john

28" is about the longest it pull and oils within it's comfort zone.

Oh yes, 6100 has a small husky mount and the 7900 the large one. And the 7900 drinks noticeably more. If you need the cc's you need the cc's.

I don't need 79cc's/6+HP, but I am addicted to them thus I simply ignore the fuel consumption and just enjoy the ride whenever I have the opportunity or urge to! :b1:

As been said by @foeke :
- Dolmar/Makita 6100 = small Husqvarna bar mount
- Dolmar/Makita 6400/7300/7900/9000 = large Husqvarna bar mount

Yes, the older Dolmar/Makita 6400/7300/7900's have the higher rpm limited coil that cuts out at 13.5k.

After selling my Husky and Jonsered a good number years ago, I am not familiar with the bar mounts,
Does the bar in this image fit the small 6100 or will it also fit the 7900, am guessing the slot should be
bigger than the one in this image to take the power of the larger 7900.
This bar will fit my Shindaiwa 490, the K095 will also fit if I cut a track between the small
set of holes in it to the larger set for the oil to got to the bar.

Thanks and regards, john

Just to mention it, a 6421 flywheel and coil swap onot a 7910 will pick the rpm back up to 13500. I have cut with both 6100 and 7900 and I own booth models brand new, if I were going to run a 20" bar and nothing else, the 6100 would get my nod, and when it is porated, I hear it is a true beast, if I were to run anything above the 20" I would carry the extra weight and take the 7900.

A stock 6100 is a dog,i couldn't believe how gutless it was the way everyone went on about how they run, ported it and couldn't believe how strong it was but it's also very heavy for its size,a 7900 can't be much heavier and is a mile ahead in power.
If your 7900 won't run a 20" 8pin then something is wrong with it.
This one runs a 8pin in frozen oak just fine

I thought it through, and as I have the Shindaiwa 490 that will do most of what I need to,
there was just no point in getting the 6100, because when a big tree came along or I needed
to cut faster I would not be able to.
In my view having enough power is hard to beat,
and I won't need to mod anything for my needs, except maybe a bigger drive sprocket and
as am only going 18" for now it should work out well.
So I ordered the 7900 with a 3/8 .58 bar and chain.
Would have liked to try one first, local dealers are plentiful, but none were in stock,
nor would order one in to try, and the local firewood guys all run Husky or Stihl,
farmers here that I know seem to fall for Stihl or Jonsered, Jonsered because the agri store sells them and its convenient to get them looked about as one does many trips to the agri store through the year as opposed to a Saw only store where Stihl and Husky are sold.

Thank you all for your comments and posting your experiences.
If anyone knows what actual chain this saw comes with and what file size is required
to sharpen it may be they could advise.

Thanks & Regards, john

Your 7910/7900 should be set up with a Dolmar or Makita branded Oregon 73 chisel chain, at least that is what they come with here in Europe.
In my humble opinion it is a very good chain and You can go two ways about sharpening it:
- use a 5.2mm diameter file from new till worn
- use a 5.5mm diameter file from new till about half life, then use a 4.8mm file till worn

Some suggest using three file diameters throughout the chains life, 5.5/5.2/4.8mm, but to me it seems over the top.

I use the 5.5/4.8mm file option and it serves me very well!

Congratulations on Your order, I believe You'll like Your new saw once she arrives.
Don't forget to post up some pictures!

Cheers :beer-toast1:
