Magnesium Welder Needed

What is involved when welding magnesium. I have a split shaft coupling I would like to fix. Is it something the average guy with a mig or tig could do?

You need AZ filler rod (cost around $2-3 a rod-yeah I'm not kidding) and an AC Tig.

If you can tig aluminum, you can tig magnesium. AC high frequency is best, but it can be done on DC with helium. Filler is $239 per pound around here. It's not difficult if you have some time under a hood, but it's pricey to get started.

Ta, thanks my brother is into welding and has migs & tigs I just wanted to know what I should buy to weld magnesium. AZ filler rods! If I come armed with them, I should get my two little jobs done!

IIRC, it's AZ92 you want for saw cases.

At least for me, the filler likes to ball up more than aluminum. I think that's how Shaun does a lot of freehand build ups.

AZ92A filler from Harris.

I most freehand build up. Mag is too dirty to use a backer, it will be all porous on that side. So you 3d print it, the manual way!
