I think the rule is more duck tape after you break your bigger hammer. Sometimes bailing wire can be added to the mix!! 🤣
At work we have "Adam" (1.5kg) & "Eve" (1.0kg) hammers with welded on steel pipes.
They seem to work quite well.
I might go that route with my sledgehammer once I find a nice pipe (and I may know just where there might be two of a good length, OD & wall thickness sitting idle for 2-3 decades).

Still gonna use lots of duck tape to cushion and grip the pipe/handle though. šŸ™ƒ

Bailing Wire?
The local, daily, newspaper used to be bundled using steel wire.
I think almost everyone that I knew, picked up the wire of the street side and did poor mans repairs with it.
More than couple of old mowers and garden tillers with "best guess throttle linkage"
came through the shops in my area.
heck, We had some of it holding the upright freezer door shelves in. until Mom could afford a new freezer eventually.

Besides, If you didn't pick up the wires, your mower blade and crankshaft seal would collect it for ya.
