I'd recommend a Marlin 39A in 22 LR, the one in the center, since it's still in production.
They are? If so I would strongly recommend a used JM stamped (preRemington)39a. Believe it or not the 39a was the most intricate, time and labor consuming firearm Marlin built. From what I've seen of the new Remlins I don't think I'd trust the QC.

I’m a little leary of buying a brand new Marlin...quality just ain’t there like it was several decades ago...but I’m on the hunt for a mint, older Marlin 1895 in .45-70.

And no it's not. 1972 BO prefix serial number. Ballard rifling. With my son's Henry.

I like my Winchesters too (22 mag & 44 mag).

The 39A is now a custom shop product. I believe it is made at the old Dakota Arms shop now owned by Remlin so it should be decent. It always amazed me that Winchester and Marlin never seriously tried to make an inexpensive .22 lever action. Henry found a very ready market there.

Wasn't the 250 just a lever action version of an existing autoloader, like the lever action Nylon 66 was?

Yes.
There was a lever action, slide action and semi auto.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I’m out of 44 but still have some boxes of 38s and 357. Have you run those rounds through it?
I use to have a marlin lever in 357. Killed a Doe with it. Traded it away back in the 90’s. Very nice rifle. Wish I still had it. I’ve never ran any 44 special through my Win trapper. I usually only practice with the loads I hunt with. Currently using 240gr cast HP’s and have others loads to try. The Winchester, in my experience, is a smoother action and lighter weight than my 1894 marlin. Both equally accurate.

You can't shoot .38S or .357M through a rifle chambered for .44M.
Really? Wow I’m glad I didn’t buy one. But you can though a revolver? I thought I ran many 38s/357 in my buddy’s 44 SW

No I’d never attempt that. Different diameter bullets. I’d only shoot what the barrel cartridge says.

Are you sure you didn't shoot .44 specials through a .44M? You can do that but you can't shoot .44 magnums through a .44 special.

.38s and .357m cartridges would rattle around in the chamber/cylinder of a .44 cal firearm.

Well to be honest it was a long time ago. My friends were all older and used me as a ginny pig. for a lot of things. Like having me shoot 3 shots followed by 2slugs in a stockless 12g in fast concession. Same with a light weight semi 12 3 birdshot followed with two slugs. Thought I had a broken wrist After I made that post I call my ole buddy if we shot .357s out his .44
I recently shot a “friends” concealed 357 with some(I think .38s shorts, I had never seen them before or since, but they were almost 1/3 smaller than a.38) once I got to the last two bullets I got the real .357s

I would not want that to be my every day gun! It was small, but noo fun to shot.
