I’m a little leary of buying a brand new Marlin...quality just ain’t there like it was several decades ago...but I’m on the hunt for a mint, older Marlin 1895 in .45-70.

What kind of ammo are you planning to shoot? If cast lead, then a Remlin might be a better choice as most of the JM 1895's had Micro Groove. Micro Groove can certainly work with lead, but is not nearly as forgiving as the conventional groove Ballard rifling used by Remlins and the last few years of JM rifles. Far as I know, all of the octagon barrel 1895's use Ballard rifling whether JM or Remlin. I had a real beauty of an 1895 from 1974. Ended up selling it to a collector as I didn't have the patience or expertise to come up with a cast load it liked, also I really didn't want to put hunting wear on an honest 98% rifle.

I've got a couple lever actions I plan to get out of my gun safe to make some room. One is a mid 50's Savage 99 chambered in .300 Savage. The other is a mid 70's Winchester 94 in .30 .30. Nothing special about either of them but both in good condition. The other gun that needs to leave is a Remington Model 8 in .32 Remington. Not a lever but an early semi-auto.

The Remington model 8 is pretty cool! Can you even buy .32 Rem ammo anymore?

32 Remington loaded ammo for model 8 and 81. Is not cheap by any means $43.00 per box, bufflo arms company.

Ammo seek has 170gr for a mear $31.49.

Those are two that came up doing a search.

Cheaper than dirt has 300 Savage winchester brand for $37.89.
Goes up by brand from there.

Both are some thung you would want to buy dies for and reload unless your so loaded down with money it doesn't bother you to spend over $1.50 per shot.

Gas is cheap. depends on yoiu prespective.
I at one time thought 29 cents a gallon was high.

I actually have an ammo supply for the .32 Remington. You can fire form .30 Rem to get brass to load. Most manufacturers stopped making .32 Rem ammo decades ago. The gun is 100 years old, probably wouldn't be a daily shooter.

When gas was 29 cents, you could also buy a pick up truck for about$2500.00. Things change. lol.

I have a Winchester 94 in 30-30, a Rossi in 44 Mag, a Henry Big Boy in 357 Mag and a Henry 22LR. My favorite is the 357M Henry, my least favorite is the Win 94.

How old is your 94? I don't think I've ever seen a single firearm model that could vary so widely in quality from the same maker. 94's range from absolute works of art to sloppy garbage.

I don't remember exactly, I think it's early 90s.

I remember when I was a teenager you could buy a Winchester .30 .30 at the local grocery store for $97.99. I wanted one but $97 or $97,000.00 was about the same difference. Wasn't going to happen. I like guns for their aesthetic appeal. Nice wood and machined steel with tight tolerances to me are a beautiful thing. I have a 1918 Mauser in 8mm that's got an action as smooth as butter, even after 100 years. I shot my first deer with that gun. It has the old military sights that ramp up for 2000 meter shots, lol. I ground down the stock a lot to lighten it up. It's nothing special to anyone but me.

Back in the early 2000's there were a bunch of nice Turkish Mausers coming in for under $100.00 apiece. Of course, I didn't buy one like a big dummy.

In lever action news, I dropped off my Henry H001T at the gunsmith to have a Lyman 66 receiver sight installed. This sight fits Marlin and Winchester lever actions but can fit any firearm with a flat sided receiver. Previously I had the Williams FP-GR on it. This sight clamps on the scope mount groove and works well but is too wide for the skinny receiver of a lever action, it's more intended for bolt actions.

I love Winchester 1894s. I have a 1941 and a 1956 both in 30-30. I bought the 1956 back in high school for $125.

With Hornady LEVERevolution they are pretty impressive. I never gave them too much credit until I went boar hunting and carrying them on deer drives. Nice, light abs fast handling.
