I picked one of them a while back in a box for $50. New piston and a few parts, turned out to be the most disappointing saw I ever ran. Made me quite a few bucks though. ;)

I owned an 038av at one time. My brother has it now. I was never impressed with it given how much it weighs. I am hoping the added cc's of the magnum II will make me love this one. This one will be a winter project. I will do new bearings and seals and such. Then look to have it ported.

The one I had was a Mag. Ported is a different story. I ran one Randy did and it was a torquey sob. I guess I prefer a saw with much more rpm's than those have had.

I kinda like the old torque monsters. My 910 and 920 jonsereds are not high speed but you can sure lean on them and they just keep throwing chips.

I think these things are running bastards when the carbs are right. They have all the speed and torque of an 044 and then some. A little port work and they end up feeling more like an 046.
This one in the video is stock and running an .050 chain on an .063 bar so it kept catching up unless I had it under heavy load.

The 038 can be massaged a tad and wake up a tad .Keep in mind the AV is an offset combustion chamber with a hemi-domed piston .The mags were flat topped with a centered chamber .I have no idea about the 038 super as I've only seen 2 or 3 in my life time and never have been inside one .

Maybe find someone to port it. Anybody have any thoughts on who would be good to port it?

Send it to Jason. He will make it sing! He does wonders with Stihls.
