Intake boot air leak

Found a leak around the intake boot on one of my 346’s today, right about where the partition squeezes together. Has the usual husky clamp.

I was curious if anyone applies any sealant or something in this area when rebuilding. Maybe a better clamp?

The cylinder might clean up using a few drops of muriatic acid on a qtip to remove the bulk of the aluminum transfer. And then try some sanding to see what all is left over. Can’t tell until you get the aluminum out of the way.

If you snip off the tabs that stick up on the plastic clamp and grind off the three or four lines on it, a husky 385/390 clamp works nicely.

I use a sealant on them, particularly a little bit around the impulse nipple. It allows the impulse to slide into the hole without kinking it off. Many of them I’ve taken apart had the impulse nipple bent off on an angle from improper assembly

A little bit of grease will keep it from pinching.

As a suggestion for repairs of torn boots Loctite 401,which is o-ring glue is the hot ticket .O-rings are made of buna n rubber same as the boot .

Put a bit of grease on it is the best option.
Trying to do them dry they always seem to want to pinch.

I have been working hard on this thing, still a couple of stubborn spots. Above the exhaust port feels more ‘scratched’ but not deep. I think it’s looking decent though. Still some finishing to do.

I don't use grease on the bellows, as mentioned above, spending time on the bellows and the partition wall so that it is installed all the way down without damaging the nipple is the key.
And have a good pair of pliers to squeeze the clamp so that it comes on without twisting the partition wall.

I can recommend sacrificing a pair of pliers for the 346/357 clamp.
Maybe I was lucky, but the clamp locked on the first try, usually 5-10 times before I have success with standard pliers.
This is my second pair of pliers, the first one is hidden somewhere.
Now that I'm making chainsaws again, it was priority 1 to make.
