Years ago my Brother (MechanicMatt's Dad) asked a local guy for some logs for firewood. The guy drops off this large diameter Red Oak log.

Luckily, I had just purchased my 044 w/24" bar, so I was able to get through it going in from both sides, then noodle it (he did not have a vertical splitter, and you were not lifting those rounds).

The only saws we had previously run were Homelites, and we were just in awe of what that 044 could do, and how fast it could do it. Hence, my Brother eventually purchased a 460 arctic.

The Pirate-Bug model.

I did Heath. I cut sides, then noodled in to get the outsides off, then cut the inside third and used a wedge to pop it off. Then kept repeating it.
I did both of these big sticks. Took me a long while to do them. But I did them.

Here are a couple of pics of the way I cut that beast. With my stock Stihl 029 Farmboss with 18" .325 bar and chain.

Neighbors put up lawn chairs because they couldn't believe that I was going to cut it up. LOL
I am Portuguese. Nuff said.

Hey, for the first 5 years I heated my house with wood I cut everything with a Homelite Super 2 with a 14" B&C (no AV). Then I got a Homelite 330 with a 20" B&C, big improvement, but after I got the 044, I never ran either of those saws again!

Homelites were box store saws by the time I started buying my own, so I'm not familiar with them, but I did spy a 410 a few weeks back.

About the size of an 044: Any Good?

I have no idea! I got the Stihl and never looked back. We had Homelites because my Brother's FIL owned a Hardware store, and that is what they sold, we got good deals! Also, my FIL worked as a tree guy, and Homelites was all they ran (mostly XLs).

Jeff,

This is how Banter is 'sposed to work.

Thank You for not taking it too serious.
Lol. It's all good Heath! [emoji106]
Lol.
That was why I bought a 660 with a longer than 18" bar. I got a 36 for my longest bar.
Here is a couple of shots as I finished the other tree.
I did it for a friend. When he said, I think this is too big for you to handle," I set my mind to it. I was going to cut that tree come Hell or High water. Kid was completely amazed when it was done. Lol

I could not go through a season without something going wrong on the Homelites, usually the recoil. Often had to repair them several times a year. Got sick of doing it.

The Stihl was faster, stronger, and dead solid on reliability.
