For Stihl to replace the 461 with a saw (the MS500) that is a lb lighter and 8/10 Hp more powerful, well ... I think that is a big move, and the 461 is a well respected saw.

If you view the 462 as a replacement for the 441, and the MS500 as a replacement for the 461, both saws are noticeably lighter and more powerful than their replacements. Based on actual ccs (and not the designated #s), I think that is the fairest way to view it.

I don't have the slightest clue regarding specs of the 441 & 461, had to Google it.

Yes, Stihl will do good superceding their own products.

But I don't see them leaving their competition behind unless Stihl is being let to do so.

What I'm wondering is the rated noise level of the 462, it's quite a scream at 121dB (if I got that right).
Considering noise regulations I see Stihl having to plug the muffler to reduce the decibel level, then again maybe they've buttered the regulations body enough so they don't have to.

Really looked good even before porting.

I don't think I'd change it at all from there. I will still have a ported 390xp, because it's a 390xp. But I will have t handle the 462 and 500i see how they feel and then see how the price tag moves me. Might very well be worth it, or not. Time will tell.

Something like this? :rocker:

I am looking at this quite differently to you. Stihl, husqvarna and dolmar are all currently selling saws that do not match the performance of the 044,046,372oe and 7900. They have gained weight, mufflers have been choked and work is required to to make a new saw run like it should out of the box. This is the first 70ish cc saw that is a reversal of this trend.
This is most notable to those who are brand loyal to stihl, but it is a reality with all of the major brands. To see a company use the technology at their disposal to not just meet ever increasingly stringent EPA regulations but to exceed previous performance targets at the same time is worthy of being celebrated. It may not be a massive shift forward, but it's the first shift in the right direction for a long time in this class of saw.

Dolmar doesn't have the support here that the others do.

After running both, I still prefer my MS461 to the 7910.

Nothing wrong with the 7910, but I like the commonality of parts, B&Cs, Filters, etc., along with many other things that go along with 35yr established platforms known as the 1122s & 1128s.

I am however interested in the replacement platforms, hence,

Exactly, it is like when the automakers finally ended the long performance drought from the late 60s!

And, if you check the weight on the soon to be released 572 (same cc as the 462), it did not go on a diet!!!

You're right but, I bet we'll see something bigger than just 72cc on this 572 crankcase.

BUT ... not with M Tronics and spring AV!!!

The MS500 should be a lot like a new 064, in a lighter version!

I just hope it will have less issues... The old loggers around here had many issues with the early 064. My 064 is almost bullet-proof, but I know it's not as light as the 1st ones.
