Don't remember seeing any carbon in the muffler. I took the muffler off about a month ago to powder coat it. No way to tell now?

That sliver you found in the case was prolly a piece from the piston.
John, he fished it out with a magnet. It is steel....I think I had it embedded in my index finger once.... Yanked it out and threw it as far as I could. It could have landed in Pittsburgh!!!?

Oil seal driven too deeply?

Edge rubbed off by the bearing?
i thought also about something from the bearing. I guess we wont know until he split the case.
I never pay much attention setting the seals, if that is what happen in this case I will be a nervous wreck lol

Was the crank rubbing the bottom of the case? Something up with the bearing on that side?

Bristles from a wire wheel are hard.

Just a guess but what about a piece from the screens in the muffler? It looks a little small but like I said just a guess

Ah ha, there has been some rubbing on on side of the crank. You may find that was a small sliver of race or seal as previously stated. Was the flywheel bearing bad before the rebuild?
