The 90s in your plumbing will create heat. Try running it for a while and touch one, or if you have a temp gun, you can shoot it and see how warm it is. I have 90s on my splitter, but I have a cooler to keep things at 140 degrees as well. I prefer the 90s as when it's cold out, it helps heat up the oil to operating temperature quicker.

Increasing the rod side will decrease the return stroke, but will require additional plumbing, as you have a cylinder full of oil, and then on the return stroke, you have to get rid of all that oil. I have a 3.75" rod on mine, and I'm up in the 65 gpm range on the return stroke. A dump valve takes care of that, but like I said, it's extra plumbing to do.
