Neighbor has had a 440 for a few years and recently got a new 455 Rancher. Both at their little cabin an hour away. Chainsaws and 2 stroke engines are new to him. He is impressed with how his new 455 sounds different than his 440. Says it whistles. Does this saw normally whistle or is he burning his saw up? I assume it came from the shop tuned and he hasn't F'ed with it.

Just to clarify, does it make the whistling sound while idling or at full throttle? I have a 440 and had a 455 for a short bit and I don't remember it whistling, if he is getting it while full throttle, might be the new chain on a new bar not getting enough oil yet and you get metal on metal singing from that? Just a guess. You might put a tach on it and see if when pinning it it goes above normal RPM range, if so then yeah, the whistling might be sucking air. Before doing that, might pull the muffler off and verify no marks on the piston. If there are marks, then I would take it back to the dealer and have them look at potential for warranty work.

I'll never be within 50 miles of the saw. Pretty sure the whistling is at WOT in wood. I'll bring it up with him and maybe show him one of mine running in tune and lean. Figured I'd ask if this saw made a unique whistling sound before bothering.

More than likely what he's hearing is the saw cleaning up in the cut more distinctly than with his 440.
