What is the good, bad, and ugly of the Husqvarna 61s? Just bought one cheap because the recoil was siezed. Simple fix, back the screw off to allow the cup to turn, and reinstall the recoil spring in the proper direction. It is an older white top rancher without a chain brake. Will post photos in the day light.

What mods can I do to make this saw better? Obviously a good tune, sharp chain, and a muffler mod to start with.
Mike
61 has the same crank case as the 272. You can swap the jug to make more power. But the early white top is said not to fit the taller cylinder. Later orange top can fit it.

61's are a great saw, the earliest version had a two piece ignition set up. Which if you loose spark, might as well replace both as the other won't last long anyways.
Muffler mod will get you going good, and while yes any cylinder from the series will fit, I wouldn't go with a 272 like the rest of the pack, even though it's the biggest. A 266 or a 630 cylinder will fit under the hood just fine and cut like the dickens. A Tillotson is better than the first Walbro's that came out. Here the 272 carb is the best version for performance although any from the series will work.

@Stump Shot This one definitely does have the 2 piece ignition, and will have to double check but believe it has the tilly carb already. Guess I will need to be keeping my eyes peeled for a good jug to make some upgrades. But that will be later as budget allows for more fun again.

You bet, I would just get that running, it might just surprise you.
There were guys here logging with that exact same saw back at that time. ;)

Close port good stuff.

Yup, that's closed port and so not the original 61 cylinder, looks like someone has already done some upgrading.
Can see 48z, probably a 48zn5 from a 162 or 630.
I wonder is the carb still a 163 or maybe something bigger...?
Here are a few pictures of the cylinder and the carbs. Curious what you all can tell me about about this saw. Seems I got an even better deal than previously thought. Have learned a fair amount from everyone already here.
