I'm working on a buddy's saw that he said wouldn't start .
He tells me he lent it out to his dad and the saw quit running and won't start .
I come to find there isn't any compression so I tore it apart and found the ring frozen in the piston .
The pistons very blackish from what I'm thinking is carbon ...it also has some very lite scoring on both the cylinder and piston but not terribly bad ..I'm thinking I can clean them up and maybe get by with a new Caber .
My question is whats your thoughts on what may have caused this ?
I was thinking bad gas maybe .
Thanks... Ernie

Moved to the general chainsaw page. I bet you’ll see some more traffic there.

If the 440 has a catalytic converter equipped muffler, I would be suspicious of heat damage caused by that. Non cat aftermarket mufflers are readily available and cheap for that saw.

I think I have a spare cylinder that would fit if you need one. Any pics of the wall where that scoring occurred?

I love my 440, its a real overachiever for being a 40cc non-pro saw. Pretty sure that none of the 440's ever had a cat muffler, my 2018 model doesn't. Matter of fact, the stock muffler on mine is quite unrestricted and sure sounds like it. I am thinking a new piston and cylinder would be your best bet overall. My experience has been that the piston and cylinders of even the better homeowner units are kind of marginal to begin with and any kind of scoring or even just many hours of honest wear renders them unusable. Put a new jug and piston on and enjoy new saw engine power.

The muffler on this saw is wide open inside ...I don't see any type of restrictions or baffles of any kind and the screens clean .

make sure your seals are good and use honda bond or good sealant on the bottom end.
