Cases are split, and ready for oil decontamination.

Does anyone have any clue what rods should be used for welding the case?
What is crankcase made of? Pure Magnesium, magnesium alloy or ? and if so which alloy

Heard somewhere that someone pieces of scrap crankcase for filling the holes.

They are pure magnesium. I use AZ92A filler from Blue Demon, I recommend 1/8" filler rods.

I wouldn't use scrap pieces for filler, you're likely to just introduce more contaminates that way and have a hard time controlling the amount of fill you dab in.

Thanks everyone for advices and inputs.
I've changed my mind, with all due respect to jb weld, i couldnt live with a feeling that it might fail soon
and after year and a half of seaching a welder who could weld it for me I gave up and did the obvious :
I bought a new cran..k..... an AC/DC TIG welder ... :cunaooooo: ... wish me luck.

Few tiny tiny crevicles, i guess from soaked bar oil evaporating ?
@srcarr52 would know for sure

They are all contaminates, it not always from oil burning off, sometimes it's impurities in the base metal. That's why you see a lot in the heat effected zone of the weld. Older Stihl cases are the worst.

queenweldingsupply It seems it has gone up in price recently, it's now $110 for 1lb of 1/8" ERAZ92A.
Quite interesting... says on the rods "made in england" and yet cant be found in europe for purchase.

For a different type fix without welding, consider drilling and tapping the holes to the nearest pipe thread and install a set of socket head brass pipe plugs in them with some permanent threadlocker to help keep it sealed up well. That should take your worries away of having epoxy fall off and burn your saw up.

Have fixed engine block holes like that before. The taper thread of a pipe plug would likely push the edge of the case out in this situation.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. Thread locker and a snug fit will get the job done. I look at it this way, it was already broken when I tried to fix it, if I fail, the first time am just back to square one. Most success/failures come from the mechanics head to his/her hands. So if drilling and tapping ain't your thing then this repair most likely isn't for you.
