the 281 wore me out starting it today lol it should make it interesting when you mod the muffler on it or decide to get a 288 top end.

The hutzl muffler is in the way, I'm gonna try hacking on it instead of messing up my good oem one up.

I ran that 281 today it pulls harder than his 390 husq. That 281 hauls ass.

Something is up with that, as it surely isn't normal....

Finally put the 24 on the 281 with a brand new roll of full skip stihl chain and didn't even get to run it.

I doubt skip is a good idea with that saw and bar - but each to his own.

I wasn't aware that the 288 top end was still available new. But depending on price I'm of course interested in a used one.

Likely made at the KolbenSchmidt factory in Brazil. The 288xp still is made as well, at Husky's Brazilian factory - as is the 281xp.

The 181 and 281 were big with racers because they were right at the 5 cube limit. I think the 81's are typically lighter as well but probably not much.

Well, the statement is silly in the world of engines. It just is a popular statement that never really was true unless all other factors were the same, and then the point was lost anyway (they are close to that in the case of the 281 vs. the 288, but likely not 100%).

There is a long list of other factors than pure displacement involved in developing both the torque and power output of an engine. Those other factors started developing very early in the history of combustion engines.

In many cases, those other factors directly replace a larger displacement - there is no way around that fact.
