I’m not trying for a derail here and I know this has probably been hashed out before but what do you square gurus feel is the CC or HP threshold for moving up from .325 to 3/8 assuming an appropriate bar length, reasonable sharpening skills, etc

I know species and fresh vs dried and all the other variables that come in to play

Just looking for a little validation on my recent choices...

:grazy:

I only have one 50 and one 60cc saw. I never liked how 325 cut to me. It was easier to bind up with the narrower kerf and more teeth for the same length to sharpen. A good 45-50cc shouldn’t have trouble running 3/8” even stock.

Don't misunderstand what I wrote. My saws run it fine.
My preference is 325. I like the smoothness. I could run 3/8 on my stock 026. My ported saws run just fine. But I run 325.

With that said, my 325 cuts like 3/8. [emoji6]
Anyone who knows me knows I have experimented in depth with 325 chain and different filing techniques. [emoji16]

Yes Kevin. Not sure exactly, but it just feels better to me. Smoother. My preference.
Mikes right, you can like either chain filed right. I go back & forth between .325 & 3/8 on 50cc saws. I'll run .325 for a few months then switch & go 'how too is this 3/8' then I'll run 3/8 for a few months & think the same about .325 when I switch. Both have good cutting potential, how they are tuned is what makes the real difference. For me, I differ in opinion from the general crowd who think 'if its got the nuts it'll run full 3/8'...I find .325 loads the saw more with the extra cutters in the cut & 3/8 behaves a bit more like semi skip keeping the revs higher. Well on 15", 16" & 18" bars anyway.
