Thank you Keith.
Yes Carlton and Stihl in .325 are quite different. Stihl and Oregon are much closer. I can square the Stihl and Oregon, not the Carlton. Just doesn't look physically possible.
Happy New Year...
Nothing is impossible Jeffus. I did this Carlton K1L chain a while back. Double bevel. It’s not perfect, but good enough for who it’s for. Lol
There’s so much material left from the factory grind, so it’s a pain to get started. Either knock back the gullets with a round file first, or if you don’t care about your double bevel files, start low and file your way in under the tooth, then bring the file up into the cutter.
I prefer the Oregon and Stihl in .325 as well, with Stihl being the top dog for me.
The Carlton chain doesn’t have that nice crisp outer corner either, so it just won’t get as pointy as the others.

Oh, and Happy New Year :D

Nice job Sondre. [emoji106]
That is a nice photo showing how short the cutter is.
Carlton definitely does not have that sharp outside edge. Almost looks like a combination between full-chisel and semi-chisel.

Thanks Jeff. I agree. I have a couple of loops of it, but when they’re gone I’m not getting any more.

325 is for stihls that can’t pull 3/8” anyway. [emoji23]

I’m not trying for a derail here and I know this has probably been hashed out before but what do you square gurus feel is the CC or HP threshold for moving up from .325 to 3/8 assuming an appropriate bar length, reasonable sharpening skills, etc

I know species and fresh vs dried and all the other variables that come in to play

Just looking for a little validation on my recent choices...

I think it depends on the saw of course...this is a little 2149 but it’s been ported and handles 3/8 no problem. I like running all the same pitch if I can so I can take less stuff when I cut.

I think once you go to 60cc 3/8 should be ran. Some smaller saws can run it of course if they are modded. Or you adjust the raker setup accordingly.

I run 3/8 on everything 60 and up. 3/8p or .325 on everything under 50. 50-60 you can run whatever you want. I like .325 for small stuff, limbing etc because it's smooth. If I'm bucking firewood with my 261 I prefer 3/8 because it's easier to sharpen and you don't need to as often.

I have been running .404 on my 361 just because I can run it all day.

This was my mindset when I decided on my PS-5105 as my middle saw. When @Mastermind ordered it all I knew was it had a 20" bar but I had no idea if it was .325 or 3/8" and honestly didn't care. I kind of knew (thought/figured/hoped) it would balance and perform better with an 18" bar so I ordered a new Tsumura bar in 3/8" .050 which is what my PS-7900 runs so I had commonality of stuffs. I also got 2 rims in case it came with .325 and ordered 2 loops of Archer semi chisel and 4 loops of Oregon LGX as well

I ran it in November with the stock 20" bar which turned out to be 3/8" .050 with Vanguard chain and it is certainly not lacking in power for what I need it for

I am looking forward to getting a vise setup, some files, and some time so I can play with a loop of the LGX
