I use that term for a round chain that is being converted and the side plate isn't fully straight, still some round to it. I've tried it and I feel like you still don't have the full benefit, smoothness wise, of fully square. Not a fan... and I'm talking firewood chain here, not race.@Wolverine

If your going to convert round to square, you might as well get the side plate too. It’s only 3 more swipes

Top plate is converted, side plate relatively untouched. Some run it like like that. Won’t hurt, just not as smooth as the fully straight side plate (in my experience).
