I can try that too. I kinda like mine clamped in the center but maybe that'll help hold the angle. Like filing over the top of the saw?

A cutter point has to engage the wood to feed, but to move material, it has to sever the fibers along the side plate. Not bind up on a shelf made by a low intersecting line.

This is around the time most new square filers give up & give it away. Almost the hardest part is them first few chains that look god awful that leave u frustrated. But push through it, soon something just clicks & you get cutters roughly close to a factory grind. Then its just about programming muscle memory so file position becomes second nature. Its kinds demoralizing to begin with you often don't know whether your going from bad to worse. Hang in there!
