Generally similar to the masses, for the most part. The switch, without pulling my rope out(thats what im curious about)
I have a 288 with switch wire disconnected (and owner to lazy to solder) choke stop with no issues, starts same. 7910 that I wouldn't dare try it, one of those that occasionally floods for no reason, and like buy flood insurance floods. Would be afraid choke would prime and begin flooding of cases. On the plus side, that saw will start on first pull most of the time w/no choke and a middle of the road 4stroke tune, even single digit temps.
Only other stopping variant that I practice on occasion is for emergency stops only and requires jamming your scrench into the flywheel.

Ha Ha ha .The reason Rich Dougan does that is so the starter pawls don't get caught on compression back spin and tear the recoil up .Probably not a bad idea but he's the only one I know of who does it .BTW I've had to replace starter pawls .Fact got one right now I'm restoring with a bad pawl .

I don't doubt it at all, just nobody ever told me about it and I don't guess I've ever lost apawl, to inspire me to study it close enough to be knowledgeable in starter theory.(see: "owner to lazy " in original post) I was confident that he had a reason, I imagine that with increased compression, would come increased shock load on related parifanalia ,hence the pulling out of gear, if you will. I imagine in very simple terms, so...

Many don't need the off/on switch when taking the saw off the shelf for a hard long cleaning/polishing session. But then there's that group of piss revers who while wearing flip flops put their ported saws through there paces looking for max no load rpm on the tach from the balcony or in their shop ...arhh the piz revers.
