If it does have an idle jet that is a bit small be careful drilling it a bit larger do it
in very small ammounts if you go to far an go the other way it will start flooding
and then you have a bigger problem. Most of the new motors these days are set to run qute lean.
And as said in one of the other posts a lot of them surge at idle. I have a kohler on a logsplitter that
has a wee bit of surge at idle but as soon as I power it up it runs fine so I am quite happy were it is.

Gentlemen - you're not gonna believe this. I took the mower to three different professional mower shops today. They all said the mower runs perfectly normal for a Honda designed to meet California Emissions. They said as long as the engine doesn't surge while under load with the blade engaged, forget about it. They said I will never have to worry about fowling spark plugs. 🫤

As I said in my thread all the new stationary small engines seem to do it
at idle they have them fairly lean. If it does start to do it again you will probably
find then it's your idle jet. My Kohler on my log splitter after sitting for a while
had a quite bad attack of it and the idle jet was blocked. Gave it a good clean and
away she went again. Trouble out here in New Zealand we have unleaded fuel
which is rubbish and forms a jelly which causes it to block jets. Pleased everything
worked out for you so you can get on with your mowing.

With California emissions laws, I'm surprised anything runs at all.
I've got adjustable mixture needles on my trimmers and blowers. Just not anything on the mower.

I imagine if it ever gets the slightest bit dirty, it'll surge real bad.

Did I use the wrong word again? They call that a synonym or something like that?
Actually a homophone. Fouling, not fowling. I'm a school teacher, and when I see things like that, my OCD kicks in. Everyone knew what you meant.

A homophone? You mean a cell phone for gay people? :D

We're telling ya, it's running as it was designed. Trying to get it to run smooth with no load is experimental on your part. If it were mine, I would experiment, but it's not mine.

I could modify that idle limiter to allow it to turn more, but with that giant air filter housing in the way, it's hard to access once the carb is back on the engine. I'm still wondering if it will richen up a little bit when the air filter gets a little dirtier. Right now the air filter is still pretty much factory clean after only cutting two yards of grass. There's not much dust in the air right now either.

I take the air filter housing off, put a couple of spacers on the studs and put the nuts on. Then you can run it without the housing. The spacers are just old bushings from something that I tore apart. Steel fuel line would work too.

Just cut the limiter off the low speed adjustment screw and tune it. It would drive me nuts if a new engine was loping at idle all day sounding like a worn out Briggs from the 70s

Youre still goimg on about a slight surge????

I told you in your first thread how to fix it, back on dec 30 of last yr... get a set of dental bits and slightly ream the pilot/idle jet out a tiny bit at a time until it smooths out.....

Guess that wasnt good enough for you? Honda does not to my knowledge sell the pilot jet inserts for the gx200 or gx 170 carbs.... you could try fiddling with different main jets, as the fuel for the pilot has to flow thru the main before it can reach the pilot circuit, but i doubt that will help... as the pilot is VERY small, as you already know. Only way to get more fuel is to ream out the non replaceable pilot, as the screw on thw side only adjusts the air blend on the pilot circuit, not the amount of fuel.

I would leave as is if it was me. As I said the Kohler motor on my logsplitter surges a bit
at idle but straightens itself out just fine with some revs on. If it ain't broke don't fix it is
the saying. And look at the saving on fuel.

The guy at the mower shop says that hole below the Phillips screw is an air bleed. He told me if I really want to change the operation, I need to adjust the limiter cap so that it doesn't stop at the stop anymore. I'm surprised he would say that especially being the business owner. I told him he might get some black helicopters flying over his house for saying stuff like that.

I used the mower yesterday and it didn't die. It still has a slight surge at idle. I can watch the governor arm moving back and forth.

I'm still curious to see if it'll richen up when the air filter gets dirty.

The EPA really don’t want the shops to mess with the carb jets to make it dirtier;)
Engines in Cali run like crap is a normal thing you know..
