Whatever you do,dont clean it,patina like that cant be bought, and all that goop is probably holding the thing together.
Say what? lol nah is all good I've sprayed it with degreaser and hit it with a 3000 psi pressure washer at least 4 times in between hitting it with the air gun many times, It would look like a lump of dirt if I'd never cleaned it lol.

Putting cylinder back on & hitting it with the air gun ain't a bad idea. When you own a 660/066 and use it for a while ya kinda understand why Stihl did'nt change the model much in three decades. Perhaps not the fastest/smothest saw but very hard to break. Subbed.

Got to luv the husky fans (all the crap kept it from dying/ held it together) lol...turn it around if it was a Husky be all like the crap killed it and over heated it ya halfwit haha...But on a series note its a work saw it doesn't get used an hour or two then cleaned put back up on the shelf tell next time, you go to work it goes to work its a tool and part of your job if it don't work you put it to the side and pick one up that does.. I don't think hang on boss man give me 3hrs to troubleshoot my saw she no workie or is to dirty will work in the real world or am I missing something :roto2nuse:.
I'd not worry too much about me getting crap in the crankcase is kinda my thing working on little industrial engines as a hobby if anything am to clean with my restores..

I sold a rebuilt 064 to a young fella starting his own contract fencing business.

It will be a tool of trade and used as such.

He bought it because he remembered his old boss having old 064's and 066's and they just seemed to run forever

066/660 ain't the strongest stock saw but it's hands down the king of durability, they don't die easily.

I have seen lots of them that have ran a long time with no seal on the airfilter and road upside down in the rain in the back of the truck and fed the worst gas and oil your can find but it will still go to work everyday. I can't think of anything with a motor on it that's more reliable or tougher.

For our needs logging and sawmilling they have served us well over the years just a hard working saw.
Just basic maintenance and replace ware items as needed, blow the cooling system out with air every now and then. I've only seen two failures as such a snapped crank on a ms660 and one ms660 did a crank bearing in but it had a lot of hrs on it.

Your legs are way too thick to be a good saw builder. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Nice pics! What's the timber there, feel like I should know it..

Those stihls do pretty well for being the 3rd best German saw:p

Looks pretty healthy oil wise with that oil.

This is what a teardown should be based on, high hours with not an easy life.

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

I'm no saw builder and that's my older bro in that pic he's the skinny one in the family I'm short stocky like a buffalo like me old man lol..
Had time to work on it today cleaned up well everything seems good seals intake boot impulse line cleaned the carb out it was surprisingly very clean inside although diagram look clapped out and could do with a kit have to get one..So as far as what was wrong I don't know as yet I will try and start it tomorrow and go from there, It might even just be a spark plug?..
Anyway few pics , I should stick it on Gum Tree- ''one slightly used 066'' used once to cut big tree up in back yard have no need for it anymore is to big 900 bucks out the door! lol. Only joking Id not sell it poor old thing I even shouted it to some new parts for the pull start and a new air filter lookout! haha..

It could have just been something loose like a carb nut or something letting in a little air and causing poor running. But with 27 other six series to use why not pull it from service, hook up a mityvac and replace a few cheap rubber parts, rings, carb kit etc. Then when she goes back to work you will know it'll last another gozillion hours. I'm not one to replace a spark plug every few months like some but when the run time gets into the 100's/1000's of hours it may deserve a $3 plug.

Yeah I've put in a known good plug but ran out of time to fuel it up and try it today..
Getting any new parts is not easy for me as I've got to go to the next town over 1hr one way. I do have a Stihl dealer and husky dealer in my town but forget about the husky dealer he's old rude and slightly insane well put it this way off his head! If I go in there asking for a part even a spark plug he will say what's it for and soon as he hears Stihl anything that's when he goes of his nut F-ing Stihl that junk and tells me to F-off! out of his shop! for real...
Had a good Stihl dealer in my town but it shut only have this half ass Stihl dealer now that opened up ,ask for anything more than a plug you just get a blank look and they have nothing in stock...
So yes anything I need goes on my list of parts I need, If I cant find the time to make to the next town over I give the list to the old man and he passes it onto the secretary..

Strange isn't it how provincial some dealers can be. Had the same thing happen to me at a stihl dealer (why the f# you want to run a dolmar), in fact this dealer has a few contractor's who buy saws from them, but all servicing work is done at the husky shop..

Oh, and a employee didn't know what a sprocket was when a mate took one in. Poor staff training there..
