I am going through a selection process right now. We bought a house this spring with a fireplace. It may even be a rumford fireplace idk. from what I read fireplaces are junk and inserts are a must. This is all just interweb reading knowledge from a keyboard cowboy.

The insert I am seriously looking at is made by travis industries and sold under three different names. Avalon, Lopi, and Fireplace Xtroadinair. They are supposed to be very clean burning putting out low emissions like .58/hr most are like 3gr/hour. it uses gasification technology.

for the large the unit itself is just over $4k. I would love to find it cheaper but thats the price we pay to play I guess.

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks to you all that shared your experiences.

Looks like a nice insert. If you are serious about heat, it will pay for itself.
Travis industries is who made my LOPI. They really do burn clean. I love mine. So much that I bought 2. Lol

I don't try and push people into anything but I'd like to recommend blaze king princess insert into your homework. I'll just leave it at a 24+ hour burn time is nice.

In my previous house, we had a brick fireplace (not a Rumsford). It warmed the living room a little bit, but not really anything worthwhile. I bought an insert, and the day I installed it was the coldest day of the year. My home heat (heat pump with electric aux.) went from not being able to keep up, to not running at all, when I fired up the insert. It made that much of a difference.

I wish my best customer had your LOPI insert. His only handles an 18" log (so he tells me). I end up rejecting half the logs I cut to meet that constraint. I save the longer ones for myself and other customers.

I once told him that if I owned a stove that needed under 18" logs to work, I'd replace it. He didn't like that comment.

Well guys, I spent half my time today collecting a truckload of 18" logs or less for a customer with a Lopi 1250 that only accepts 18" logs or less. First class PITA. I saved the longer logs for two other customers that aren't so picky. I used an 18" scrap of branch wood as a measuring stick to separate them out. But, will the Lopi owner give me an extra dime a load for logs that fit inside his insert? Well, I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.
Here in Croatia 13-14" firewood length is common.
Occasional odball firewood lengths are funny short 10" (not kidding), very rarely 20" is being asked for.

The price for processing the firewood is always the same.

I can burn firewood lenghts up to 16" in my stove , but it will fit only 5" square.
My cast iron fireplace can take 20" length top, luckily it will handle larger sized pieces so I feed it all the knotty and odd sized stuff.

I would suggest to anyone building around the idea of a fireplace, that they try to build in a cold air source so as to avoid the house getting colder when the fireplace is working. An ash dump is a pretty nice feature too.

I can say from experience, that a properly designed fireplace can throw a bunch of heat into a room.

Between Enviro regs and whiny neighbors, it's getting harder to get away with having a straight up old style fireplace these days though.

I had bought a Blaze King King and all it got me was complaints from the wife over the cold in the house. Burn times were great. Temperatures were supposedly as good as could be expected, according to one of the BK VP's. Heat output was abysmal. It is now sitting in the corner while a Pacific Energy Summit, with about half as big a fire box, and no $300 catalytic converter to go wrong, picks up the slack.

Mine will run you out of the den and freeze the rest of the house in the process. I would highly suggest an insert of some type over what I have. I would have put an insert in when we bought this place but the bride loves this for viewing.

Here's my woodstove in Oz. It heats the house and cooks the dinner. I can boil stuff on top and then use a spacer to let it simmer. The oven has cooked bread, cakes, casserole, chicken, ribs, pizza...

https://mrstoves.com.au/wood-stoves/gourmet.html

EDIT: It has firebricks all around the inside of the firebox, so I can get a complete burn on the wood. The lever on top will flip forward and direct heat around the lower oven section. It will get real hot for cooking something like pizza.

This is in our living room. We built the house to be heated with wood. The chimney is made of cement block with clay flue liners going from the basement out the top of the 2nd floor roof. We heat about 2000 sq feet with this stove. In fact, it's keeping my feet warm right now.
