the literature specs out "combustible clearances " so....unless masonary is combustible then no its isn't required to be block.

There's an r-value requirement in there. Just setting a brick on a 2×4 won't work.

I have a zero clearance fireplace (real fireplace) with a LOPI insert. Heats up to 2400 sq ft. Takes up to 24" logs. Looks nice and is very efficient. Really is a nice setup. Best stove I ever had. Throws heat like crazy. Well worth the money spent. [emoji106]

My blaze king princess insert is unreal for burn times. That said building a chimney just for it wouldn't be cost effective. As stated earlier you can't use a real wood insert in place of zero clearance units in most cases.

I’m sure most would love a masonry fireplace but your probably looking at $30,000 for a custom built masonry install vs $5-6000 for a zc install.

We are not wanting a stand alone stove that sits in the corner of the house. We have a lot of friends with young kids that know no difference and we dont need them walking or crawling up to a stove and touching it. I realize that new wood stoves are extremely efficient and we would have one if we didn't have so many friends with young kids.

My question, is there a "efficient fireplace"? I am assuming that I can't buy a insert and build a rock wall around it and be good to go.....
Yes you can get efficient stove inserts. You can put them into existing fireplace openings or build around them to make them look like a fireplace.

I'm kind of partial to the blaze king line of stoves just because of the easy operation and even heat output. Plus the ability to operate them so low during shoulder season.

My biggest tip for you regardless which stove insert you install is try to install it so the flue pipe can exit straight up through the house. That is an important part of having a good draft in warmer weather to be able to operate the BK stoves on low. You might want to take a close look at all the chimney pipe required to install the stove also. It can cost a lot of money.

Search Out Soapstone Fireplace.

Before you turn away, they can be installed as an insert.

Most of my family are Buck Heater Insert fans, but Holland gets colder than Georgia, I Guarantee.

Added;
Uncle Ed has the Soapstone Heater.

My BIL has one. His house is open concept so the heat can radiate off the soap stone. The amount of soap stone was calculated for the living space and climate he lives in. He claims he burns two fires a day and the soap stone does the magic.

Probably a smart engineer came up with that idea.
