I have a 361 with the muffler bolt threads stripped. The bolt size is M5 x 16. The threads are fine. I went to O'Reillys and the smallest kit they had was M6. They said they could order an M5 but the kit specified coarse threads.

Also the kits look like the helicoil is very short compared to the length of the bolt. Is this normal?

Is there a kit that will work or will I have to change my bolts to match the kit?

Thanks in advance. Thomas

You need to know the thread pitch. M5 is the diameter. The pitch will
be something like 1.50, 1.75 etc. For metric. Most kits will come with
the short helicoils but you can order medium and long coils. You don't
have to change your bolts.

You might want to look into Timeserts...not certain if they make them that small, but in my opinion, they are a superior product...

The Helicoils can be stacked on top of each other if all else fails. I just used one on an MS200T and it worked fine. I think it is 5mm x .08 thread you need to check it against the bolt . It is important to use the exact drillbit that the installation calls for any bigger and it wont work. Take your time and drill it nice and straight. I just bought a kit it was like 17.00

You don't need to have the Helicoil insert be as long as the bolt. You only need about 5 windings to make a really good bite. You can use longer inserts if you're really concerned about it but in most cases they will not make a stronger repair.

In a perfect world you'd want at least twice the thread diameter for max holding strength but this all varies based on the application and material.

I bought the cheapest M5 Helicoil set I could get, it's a nice way to do a simple fix, have already paid for itself.

It definitely comes in handy. Easy to do once you know how right?
yeah, I dont know how I survived without the set before.
Some of the Huskies have 1 bolt for the oil pump, ie 346, i consider to use helicoil instead with Locktite 518, it's defently stronger then what Husky has.

Just today I repaired the muffler mounting holes on two cylinders on our friend Angelo's Ms 200T's with that kit I posted. I got both of his MS 200T's up and running and he is one happy camper.

Thank you sir. It was a pleasure watching a master at his craft. Thank Kim for the sammiches too !!!

You can usually get away with turning a stripped out M5x.8 hole into a 1/4-20 threaded hole. As long as it's aluminum or magnesium. Just run a 1/4-20 tap into the stripped out hole. If you're going to do this with a tougher material, you're going to want to drill the hole out to the proper size first. Somewhere around .203-.209.
