I'm looking for a cylinder piston kit for my Murray ms2550s string trimmer. There was no threadlock from the factory on the cylinder bolts, they loosened up and it burned up. Can't find any factory parts for it, all listings are unavailable. My research shows that Murray was bought out by Briggs & Stratton in 2005 and MTD took it over in 2012. Now, I found a MTD m2550 cylinder piston kit for $76.83 🤑 that's still available so I have some questions.
1. Does anyone know if an MTD m2550 cylinder piston kit will fit my Murray ms2550s engine. It looks the same, but who knows.
2. Does anyone know where I might find a cylinder piston kit for a Murray ms2550s?
3. If I can find one, what about those cheapo Chinese cylinder piston kits for 30 bucks or so? Has anyone tried them and if so, how did they work out for you?
4. Last but not least. What do you think the future is in string trimmers? Gas powered or electric?

Appreciate any help, thanks in advance. 🙂

Update: After looking high and low for a cylinder pistol kit for my Murray, I have been unable to find one. I found one possibility with a different number for $80, but who knows if it would fit. So, I decided that if I spent $80 for a new cylinder, piston kit, I'd still have a 5+ year old string trimmer, so it wasn't worth it and I just bought a new string trimmer, a Ryobi at HD for $160. All of my attachments will fit it, so there you have it. 🙂

Sounds like you came up with a good solution .
As you have discovered, it is not worth spending significant time or money on repairing old string trimmers.
A sparkplug, ok.
A carb kit and new fuel lines, maybe, or even that may be too much.
Not when you can get a brand new one, guaranteed to run for $150-200.
The fact your attachments fit is a big bonus.

4. in regards to the future, i suspect with politics and mentality that the 2-stroke will or at least be attempted to be phased out. There was push a few years back in those "blue" places to force the use of only electric landscaping equipment... mostly towns where those blue people were all like those gas powered leaf blowers are too noisy and offend/scare me. I don't know if that's still a thing, I believed it happened to some extent near me in CT. Sadly, for a string trimmer, that can be substituted with a powerful enough Li-ion battery... they accomplish it currently with mowers... so it's not like you can really complain and say you can't get enough battery power for a string trimmer. Which is why I wouldn't be surprised of it happening especially in suburban type locations. And then it'll be mail order for gas powered equipment for what is no longer sold in stores in your location. Honda last year announced no more mowers for the North American market in order to align with their corporate goals of emission, electric, or whatever bsh1t.
