Looking for any input on 460 Magnum vs. 500 Magnum. Which one is more exciting to shoot? Always wanted a hand cannon and it will be used only for plinking here and there and conversation piece.

Don't go cheap on us and just buy either/or...get one of each! lol

I've shot 'em both, 500 packs a little more punch, but it ain't enough to really make or feel a difference. They're both a damn handful when that primer goes off.

I don't even like shooting .357's from handguns so all I can say is, go on with your bad self!! I think a .500 would be neat in a Ruger number 1 though.

I like recoil. I shoot a TON of .22lr and sometimes it's nice to experience power!
I've shot everthing handgun from .22short to 50ae and looking for something to make me say enough!

Took me a while to save up enough disposable income to contemplate even buying one. Two is out of the question! Lol! You can shoot a few different rounds through the 460 if I'm correct which makes it more versatile in my mind. But they make 500 special if I find 500 mag is too much!

Agree with the 460 comment and just not quite sure about the 500 options...I don't own either so haven't really fooled around with 'em but just a few times with friends that have one or the other or both.

Hopefully you reload, as either can make the purchase price of the gun inconsequential. That being said, yes 460 will also shoot 454, 45 colt too. However, the shorter rounds will have to make a progressively larger jump from case to forcing cone. So accuracy will suffer. This can be mitigated by reloading, as you can download in the longer cases, to minimize the jump.

If all you want is a boomer, the sw500 is the one to get. If you want to shoot a lot and hunt, get the 460.

Let us know what you decide.

I don't reload, primarily because I'm a rimfire shooter but that can change. Pretty much want a boomer. I won't hunt with it or shoot it a ton. Just here and there for grins.

Sounds like you want the 500. Excellent choice. Get a lee wack-a-mole reloader. I use one to make 38 shotshells. Enjoy the 500, you getting the s&w?

Yes, it will be s&w no matter which caliber I choose. I really like the single action look of the Magnum research BFR series but that much power on a wild west style handle is not for me!

If you are looking for a handgun to make you say "uncle" might i suggest a TC contender in 45/70 uncompensated with a load of 55 grains of 3031 with a 405 grain bullet. My son's buddy brought over his 500 smith and a buch of us shot both. The best description of the 45/70 was "brutal". Most of them didn't want a second shot. Everybody wanted to shoot the 500 more. Even in my 1895 marlin the load is a punisher.

I could see that! That's what I'm after but I want a revolver.

If y’all don’t stop with this recommendation nonsense, Steve just gonna say to hell with it and end up with a few cases of old school M72 LAW rockets or AT4’s. He’ll enjoy the end result a helluva lot better than the contained tube recoil. Lol

Would love the BFR but I don't want the colt style grip with that much power.

Lots of recoil in a hogleg isn't a problem. You learn to let it roll roll up and not death grip it. My .44 mag super blackhawk with full power loads is fun to shoot.

I probably need to go get my hands on a few of these and see how they feel. I really want the BFR because I love that single action style of revolver. Also like you said, learning technique will be the biggest improvement to success with these big boy revolvers.
