I have yet to see where a round filed chain lasts longer than square other than semi-chisel. I have ran three tanks through my 261 bucking on trees that I dropped in 2014 and piled when we built our house. It could use a touch up now.

Before I started filing square I read alot about how it doesnt hold up and I was wary considering. Now I can, after using it, say that is utter bullsheet.
Try some post oak in that condition and tell me the same thing. It just won't.

Round filing may not stay sharp as long, but in only a few minutes, you can be back in business. Round filing is much faster to touch up. For me at least. And it is easier for me.
But I must admit. I am still intrigued by the thought of it. Lol

There are so many different angles and tooth configurations on square that it would be hard for everyone to get the same results.

I've put 4 tanks through the hybrid cutting white oak, walnut, and ash. It's still pretty decent

The corner on a square filed cutter has more material the entire way to the point than a round full chisel cutter.

It doesnt matter what species of wood you you are cutting.
It's debatable I suppose. Filing angles do come into play. And yes wood species and condition does and should have a bearing on cutter profile.

Not to jack Deets thread, cuz there's plenty of sharpening threads. Here's the last one I filed and tried. Showed it to John Redfin in pm this morning. Pic isn't good, but there's no beak it hits the corner.

I've been smitten with the square filing bug also. Only running it on my ported 357 but I like how it feels. Just something different/interesting to play around with.

Mike and I have been saying that for years. Stronger more durable working corner.

My first field touched up sq was absolutely pitiful looking, it still cut a bit better and smoother than round filed.
