A buddy called me a few years ago as he was working a detail on the side of a
town road where a tree service company was removing some good size trees
for the town. I wanted the wood for firewood. I headed over there with two
Sachs Dolmar 120SI's. The wood on the ground was around 20" and 6 to 8 feet
long. I started cutting into lengths and the tree guys were just watching. Then
they went to work and were cutting some other wood. I looked and couldn't
believe my eyes. There saws were so dull it was like they had the chain on backwards.
When i was done cutting they asked me how do you sharpen your chains. I looked
at there saws and my god the chains were toast. And these guys were tree guys.

My brother in law wanted some standing dead ash removed yesterday. So I went with the 011AVT, the new to me 455& the hot 630. He had the john deere 3816 I gave him. He started limbing the top as I went after the trunk with the 630. Next thing I know he is holding his saw giving me the thumbs up smiling as chips were flying . He asked what the hell did you do to that thing? "It don't even slow down as you dogged in hard " can you make my saw run better? I says I can try but no replacement for displacement. I sharpened his chain and tuned it up a bit better it was better but not right. I ask him how old is your gas he says oh I don't know you mixed it for me 2 years ago..... and I added stabil and some octain Booster so it should be good right? I quickly dumped it out and poured my mix in and it was so so much better. Some people will never learn, I used it to start the brush pile fire and it barely poofed atall more like a little slow light up like a diesel gas mix. Funny chit I tell you.

A few years ago we had to buck up several 30+" White Pine on a job my brother was running, and one of the "pros" he hired came with an 066 he said "was not stock" (I think he just had a few holes drilled in the muffler).

My 044 with a dp muff and HD-2 filter was my big saw at the time, but I was running square file chain on it. We both had 24" bars. The pro's jaw dropped when he saw my 044 go through the wood noticeably faster than his 066. He was running round file, and I don't think it was particularly sharp. It seemed like he believed the big powerhead would make up for a dull chain ... NOT.

I've been very impressed with ported 066/660s, but have never been that impressed with unported ones, especially if they are not running a long bar.

Went back for some more today
Smashed out enough to fill the trailer and the back of my truck in a couple hours.

While we were there a couple other blokes were using little saws to struggle through the small stuff.

We drove off fully loaded and they had a couple dozen little rounds in their trailer.

Hi Folks.

No real point to this thread, just a good yarn...... we Aussies are good for that!

I found an add on the local online classifieds yesterday advertising a HUGE fallen Ironbark, free firewood, bring your chainsaw and take what you want.

I rocked up about lunch time and there ware already 3 trucks backed up with people filling trailers.

My brother came to help me, and we drove around the other side of the tree, which has a trunk diameter of about 3 to 4 feet.

Everyone was into the smaller easy branches, and I asked if anyone had the gear to take care of the trunk. One bloke said....... YES, I DO!

using the 066 and 372, I cut and filled my trailer in an hour with 12 to 20" rounds. of nasty hard heavy ironbark.

The guys on the other side had cleared all the small stuff and were looking at the big trunk.
I walked over and asked what they had to take care of it.

They pointed to the husky 570 with a 24" bar and blunt chain that was smoking as it wore through the smaller branches and I had a giggle.

I offered to help break up the main trunk that split into a couple 2 to 3 foot thick lines.

I walked over with my 066 and the 42" bar fitted and they all turned off their $100 Chinese saws and came to watch. I dont think they actually believed I could cut through it thinking back.

42" full comp 3/8 stihl semi chisel just above the initial fork section that was about 50" wide, I ran it over the top with the saw at chest height , doged it into the top and gave it the beans!

My brother told me afterward that the other blokes were standing 12 to 15 feet back and had to pick up their saws and move as they were all being showered with red woodchips.

The bloke who owned the place said he looked down from his house and saw a big red sawdust roostertail as I jammed the 42" bar into the log. When I got through the log, after a bit of wedge hammering action, they were all standing there with phones taking pictures and videoing.

The land owner said "Geez mate, you brought the V8 model didn't you"

All the other guys that were there cutting that were considering attacking the big wood with little blunt saws picked up and walked down th the smaller stuff and kept struggling with that.

I stood with the land owner for a while talking and said I would ring him Monday to see if the big trunk was still there. If it was I would come cut it up.

We both looked down at the others struggling to cut 10" rounds and he said...... It will be here mate, see you then!

People just seem to think little saws will do anything.
The best saw they had between them was the Husky 570 and it was running like sheet, and old mate could not sharpen a chain and had it smoking in the cut trying to make it wear through the wood.
The others has those chinese copy saws.

After I showed off with the 066, my brother said he saw the other blokes struggling with their saws, and they kept looking over at my saw sitting on the ground.

And who wouldnt, its a beast with the 42" bar fitted.
Here it is with the 372 fitted with a 22" bar hiding behind the 42" bar

Fun

Who else has been in this situation, with other woodcutters at the woodpile shining jealous eyes on your good saws that actually cut?
I was asked to drop some big oaks on a ranch a couple years ago. I told him I only wanted the big logs and the rest he could burn. He said he had a few buddies that would get the smaller stuff.
So I show up with the saws and 16' dump trailer, my dad brought the dump truck and Cat. By the time we got the cat unloaded a few guys had driven into the pasture. We all walked over to the first tree which was about 3-1/2 diameter. They were talkin about how huge it was and if I had a saw big enough to drop it. I laughed and said yeah. I walk back over and grab the saws, 066 with a 28" and 088 with the 42". Their jaws bout hit the dirt. One guy had a ms 180 and can't remember what the other two had but were small.

So dad takes the 066 and makes a few starter cuts in the first tree, then I drop that one while he is making starter cuts in the second tree. I walk over and drop that one.
The guys were pretty amazed with the 088 but said I'd be there forever cuttin up both trunks with one saw. Again, I laughed I took the 066 back to the truck and got the 090 out with the 50" bar. Me and my Dad had both trunks cut up into 4' lengths before they had even made a dent in one top. So we took a few bigger limbs to help them guys out, some of the limbs were much more than what they wanted lol.

Pretty funny morning, we talked about that one for a while. Just the look on their faces when I pulled out the 090.

Yeah today was like that.

One of the guys that turned up walked past with an 029 looking at the trailer load of wood we has and then stopped to check out my 066 wearing the 42" bar on the ground next to my truck.
He looked at it, and then the big timber and walked off to fight with the foliage chasing small stuff.

I spoke to the land owner about saving the big trunk section for me to have a crack at slabbing the top section that's not been eaten by termites.
He said that would not be a problem as long as he got a slab. I recon I could pull 4 good slabs off it and said I only want 2 for what I want to do.
He said he would tell anyone who showed up to leave it alone. I told him if someone showed up with a little battery powered toy and had a go and hacking it they could destroy it for slabbing.

He also agreed to let me come out and find some other tree's on his property to slab if I wanted.

Here is the 66 running in the Ironbark.

Have a look at the color of the timber inside when the round drops. Its deep maroon.
We had to section the rounds up into 6 so they could be lifted. Its like lead!

But it burns for hours and pumps out bulk heat.

I found out today the one of the blokes cutting this tree on Friday tried to have a go at one of the big sections with his Husky 570 and blew it up trying.
Now a 570 is not a rubbish saw, but the bloke had no idea how to sharpen a chain and spent more time wearing through the wood with smoke coming from the cut.

The video above was the first cut of the morning with a razor sharp 3/8 full comp semi chisel Stihl chain.
The dirt core didn't make keeping the chain sharp any easier.

Just looking at some data online to put things into perspective if my saw looked slow

Black Locust has a density of 58 lb/ft^3 and a Janka hardness of 7,600 Newtons
White Oak has a density of 63 lb/ft^3 and a Janka hardness of 6,000 Newtons
Pine has a density of about 45 lb/ft^3 and a Janka hardness of 2,000 Newtons

Ironbark has a density of 76 lb/ft^3 and a Janka hardness of 16,300 Newtons

This stuff is like cutting a lead block

I'd like to see where hedge ranks on that list your pulling your data. It always feels about 25% heavier than oak.

Even with the same wood things can change a lot. If the tree is larger or the growth is slower, you will not get the same cut speed. Ditto cutting Black Locust if it grew in sandy soil, it is completely different. Sparks will fly from your chain.
