The PPE are in three categories

1 ) 28m / second
2 ) 24m / second
3 ) 20m / second

so with two words if your chainsaw are modified and the chain can run more of theese three categories is like to wear napkins or newspapers

Glad that the Dave is ok

That is for stopping a spinning chain on the saw by killing the engine right?
While that is certainly a possibility any time a chainsaw is running, I think with cant saws and weird chains/sprocket/bar combinations the chance of a chain getting thrown is a lot greater than normal.
I "think" once it isn't under the power of the saw it is easier to stop?

I've never got more than a small scratch from a thrown chain like that.
When I have had chains fall off the guide bar, they usually just hang there, and maybe bounce off of the sprocket teeth.

'Normally' you will have at least three things designed into the saw working to help protect you: a clutch cover, to keep the chain from flying off the saw; a chain catcher, to snag a flopping chain, and reduce both momentum and reach; and the rear hand guard (big, flat spot under rear handle) that protects your right hand from getting slapped.

Chaps and gloves are PPE that help in case the chain does reach you.

Dave was running without a clutch / side cover, so there was nothing to restrain the chain, except his PPE.

Can I ask why your not running a complete clutch cover? That could make a thrown chain fly away I'd imagine lol

Mostly I am mentally deficient but.... fast saw with a big sprocket and efficient/fast chain means a lot of chips very fast and they can clog up and stall the saw if they can collect in the clutch cover.
I saw a couple guys running reduced profile covers at a fast GTG and then this saw came with one so it seemed like the thing to do. I am going to open the rear of a liteweight plastic cover so I can clear chips and have some small measure of safety.

I understand what your saying. It makes sense. I was just wondering.

This is too funny :)
In the video I actually turn towards the camera and slap my thigh a couple of times.
I wasn't doing it for the camera but was thinking at the time "sweet, these $35 chaps just saved me from having to go to the ER".
When I watched the video later I saw it and cringed, in slo-mo I look like a tremendous douche-bag .
"I'm Dave and these pussy-ass little race chains cant hurt me cause I have thighs of iron, yee haw".
If I posted the next two seconds I would never be able to show my face around here again :)
Just poke the fibers back in the chaps and duct tape them..

Problem solved.

It looks like you pulled up right away after you cleared the cut and the cookie knocked the chain off. I bet if you wouldn't have pulled the saw up chain would have stayed on. Good that you had the chaps on.

I believe these are what you are looking for Dave! They offer the protection plus comfort of being cool while running your saw's. I would not advise use in below freezing weather.

I hasn't considered that, I am trying to improve my totally terrible technique, keeping the handle tucked in and pivoting down and having the cant at competition height. All in the hope that when I next get a chance to run against some fast saws I wont look like too big a loser :)
The position is awkward and I guess I do sort of jerk the bar back up.

No danger in that regard my friend, my ass-less chaps days are long over :)
